Also, you always wanna make sure you use the best lube for your situation, whether it’s water play, anal play, or experimentation with toys, and that's especially important for folks with vaginas.
First things first: Let's get into the three different types of lube , which are water-based , oil-based, and silicone-based. The best all-purpose lubricant is water-based , which is the only one that's safe to use with condoms and sex toys, and the easiest to clean up afterward. "Water-based lubes are well recommended, as oil-based lubes can degrade the latex of condoms and increase the risk of pregnancy and STIs," explains Dr. Kecia Gaither , MD, a double board-certified physician in OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine. Aloe vera-based lubes (which are all the rage rn) and other natural formulas are also a clean, safe bet for vaginas.
But here's the potential issue with water- and aloe-based lubes: They can dry out a lil bit quicker than other types. Silicone-based formulas last longer than water- and aloe-based lubes, but you can't use them with silicone toys or most condoms, so that kinda limits your options. "Silicone-based lubricants can be good for water play and toys as long as the toys aren’t made of silicone," Dr. Jones explains. And while oil-based lubes are the slickest and longest-lasting, they definitely CANNOT be used with condoms, though they're great for masturbation or as a massage oil.
Unless you're a big fan of yeast infections , you'll wanna make sure your lube doesn't throw off your vagina's pH levels. When the pH of your vagina is out of whack, it can lead to itching, burning, and LOTS of unpleasantness, which is why you need to read those ingredients carefully. As Dr. Gaither says, "It's best to choose lubricants that are devoid of alcohol, flavorings, or perfumes , as these can alter the vaginal microbiome, increase the risk of vaginal infections (like yeast and bacterial vaginosis), and increase the risk of irritating delicate vaginal tissues." Dr. Jones agrees, adding, "In looking for a lubricant, you’ll want something with a lower pH, as well as a lower osmolality, as these are more in tune with the normal environment of the vagina."
And while you may be a bit wary about CBD lubes (especially if you have sensitive skin ), splurging for a lubricant that includes CBD may just be the move. "CBD lubes can promote vaginal relaxation, increase sensitivity, and decrease pain and anxiety, particularly from patients who suffer from dyspareunia," Dr. Gaither explains.
