“A re you keeping up with your Kegels?” This is a question I regularly ask my mother, who is in her late 60s. As I always tell her, “You gotta keep it tight. You never know when you’re gonna need that thing again.” That thing being her vagina, of course.

Between scented tampons and feminine powders, sprays, and douche products , there is no shortage of products aimed at helping you freshen up down there. One example is vaginal or “yoni” pearls, which seem trendy and new, but have been wreaking havoc on vaginas for a while now.
Yoni is Sanskrit for “vagina” or “sacred space,” says Jodie Horton, MD , an ob-gyn in Oakton, Virginia, and chief wellness advisor for Love Wellness. Yoni pearls (also called vaginal detox pearls) "are clothed wrapped ‘pearls’ that contain multiple herbs that are inserted in the vagina to cleanse or detox the vagina and uterus,” Dr. Horton explains.
Despite the fact that your vagina cleans itself (gynecologists call the vagina a "self-cleaning oven" for a reason), unfortunately society doesn't do women any favors by suggesting vaginas are dirty or smelly or likening them to fish. (Seriously?) And so, it's completely understandable if you're conscious about yours and wondering if it needs extra detoxing with pearls or vaginal steaming .
Common herbs in yoni or vaginal pearls are those you're probably not too familiar with, including motherwort, peach kernel, borneol, osthol, and rhizoma, says Dr. Horton.
After inserting the "pearl" into your vagina, “the idea is to leave these vaginal pearls inside the vagina for 24 to 72 hours to remove the toxins and cleanse the vagina and uterus,” she says. “[However,] the thick, foul-smelling discharge that is claimed to be from detoxing the vagina is likely due to an infection.” Gasps .
Anything left inside the vagina for that long can cause more harm than good, says Dr. Horton, as it will disrupt the vaginal microbiome that exists to keep the vagina healthy and likely to lead to infection. “Infections often lead to increased vaginal discharge and a foul or fishy odor; this is why it is not recommended to leave tampons in for more than four to six hours,” she says.
There are likely no benefits of yoni pearls, despite the myths that circulate, says Dr. Horton. There is no conclusive research to show that vagina pearls are effective.
“Everyone is different, and while I’m sure there are women who claim [to see] positive results from yoni pearls, there is no scientific evidence that there are any benefits,” she says. “Products like yoni pearls lead to the belief that our vaginas need to be cleansed or detoxed because they are dirty and this is simply not true.”
Vagina pearls just might be a recipe for disaster. Inserting a foreign object into the vagina can cause irritation, disturbance of vaginal pH, increased discharge, odor, and infections, Dr. Horton says. (Here are a few healthy vagina "rules" to follow.)
“Unfortunately, [many women] are willing to try anything because, for decades and probably centuries, they have been told that their vagina should smell like anything besides a vagina,” she says. “This is why women use feminine sprays, deodorants, and products like vaginal pearls, but these products cause more harm than good.”
In a nutshell, women should understand that most vaginal discharge is normal and is simply a result of fluid released by glands in the vagina and cervix, Dr. Horton says. Vaginal discharge can range from clear to milky white depending on your menstrual cycle , hormones, and pregnancy. It may have a slight odor, but it's a foul or fishy smell that’s likely signaling an infection. If you notice a change in color, odor, amount, or consistency from your body's reg, then talk to your ob-gyn, as there may be something more going on, like an infection, notes the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
Overall, though, discharge does your body good and it's normal to have. “The fluid carries dead cells and bacteria out of the body to keep it clean and prevent infection so there is no need to detox because your body cleanses itself,” Dr. Horton says. “This acidic environment also helps keep vaginal bacteria in balance and prevents an overgrowth of bacteria and yeast. It's best to keep your feminine hygiene as simple as possible.”
Ben Wa Balls, Duotone Balls, and Kegel Exercisers
Though they have a simple design and shape, the purple vaginal beads give you effective and amazing internal stimulation. Inserting and removing is easy as both beads have a smooth exterior and are connected to each other by a sturdy nylon string. The secret to these beads comes after you insert them, as you will start to feel vibrations as you move around. These vibrations are caused by two additional balls located inside each of the purple beads. When you move, you will cause the balls to roll around, creating vibrations. When done, you can remove them by pulling on the nylon string loop located at the end.
Purple Vaginal Beads are quieter and have more subtle vibrations than the Silver Duotone Balls by using padded internal balls.
Measurements: Each Bead is approx. 1.34 inches in diameter (~4.21 inches in circumference) and approx. 4.25 inches in length when attached.
