Volume 5, Issue 3, May 1974, Pages 265-276 A detailed histologic study of 100 specimens of vagina obtained from female fetuses and girls up to the age of 25 years revealed adenosis in eight cases, five among 33 subjects less than one month of age and three among 24 patients 13 to 25 years of age . No examples of adenosis were found in 43 patients between one month and 12 years of age . In two of the five fetuses with adenosis there was prenatal exposure to exogenous progestagens . The findings of this investigation, in addition to other evidence, indicate that vaginal adenosis can arise on a congenital basis . The failure to detect it between infancy and puberty suggests that steroid hormones may play a stimulatory role . The most extensive effect of DES exposure in utero on DES daughters is on reproduction abnormalities . Vaginal adenosis has been first described in 1877 and elegantly updated by Kurman and Scully in 1974 [42,43] . It is metaplastic cervical or endometrial epithelium within the postnatal vaginal wall and considered to be islets of persistent Müllerian (paramesonephric) epithelium of the postembryonic life . There have been cases of cervical and vaginal adenoses and CCACs reported in women who have no history of DES exposure . In fact, the presence of glands in vaginae were described in women who were born before DES was clinically used, or after the administration of DES to pregnant women was stopped (Plaut and Dreyfuss, 1940; Sandberg et al ., 1965; Sandberg, 1967; Blaikley et al ., 1971; Ruffolo et al ., 1971; Kurman and Scully, 1974; Robboy et al ., 1986; Chattopadhyay et al ., 2001; Paczos et al ., 2010; Cebesoy et al ., 2007; Accetta et al ., 2001; Charlton et al ., 2001) . In utero exposure to other hormones or environmental chemicals may be the cause of non-DES associated adenosis in the cervix and vagina . Although DES is no longer prescribed to pregnant women, cervical/vaginal adenosis and CCACs are still relevant to current women's health . There have been cases of cervical/vaginal adenoses/CCACs reported in women who have no history of DES exposure (Kurman and Scully, 1974; Robboy et al ., 1986; Accetta et al ., 2001; Herbst et al ., 1975; Chattopadhyay et al ., 2001) .
