I love this album, but I have complaints. The original versions of "The Undertaker" and "Vagina Mine" — the ones on this album — are nowhere near as good as the versions on "Don't Shoot the Messenger" and "C is for (insert sophomoric genital reference here)." Also, "Lighten Up, Francis" is bizarrely quiet compared to the rest of the songs, maybe to protect your ears or stereo equipment. It actually has the opposite effect because I turn the volume up at the beginning and often forget to turn it back down before starting a different song. Also, the band's name is terrible, and the title V is for Vagina probably put a lot of people off. That said, I have no idea why I've never heard great songs like "Momma Sed" on the radio. (P.S. One of Puscifer's best songs, "Holiday on the Moon," is a cover and apparently available only as part of a tribute album for the original band, Love and Rockets.)

I am writing this review as a long-time fan of Tool and APC. A lot of reviews state the same, and I am comfortable telling you that this credential is worthless when you approach the new Puscifer album. Some of the negative reviews seem concerned about Maynard's new direction and his image. If this describes you I'm not sure you actually got what Tool or APC were about, and if you haven't listened to this album I suspect that you won't like it. IMHO, Maynard's career is about expression. At times this is angry, at others emotional. Recent developments in creative expression include wine and less traditional music (when compared to his previous music). The name of the band (I use the term "band" lightly because for all intents and purposes this seems to be his solo project) and the title of the album tell you a good deal about the project before you listen. The tone is not always as angry or emotional as his previous music. It does not always take itself seriously. There are many sexual references, which long-time Tool fans are probably used to, however many of the similarities end there. In this and other Puscifer releases, Maynard draws inspiration from country and bluegrass, rock, electronic music, and comedy. If you come into this expecting more of the same or even something similar to past releases you should probably move on. In all seriousness, I say this in the least condescending way possible. I love music and I don't want anyone to waste money on a CD that they won't listen to. Whether you are or are not a fan of Tool or APC, I would suggest you go to Puscifer's website. At the time of this review you can stream many Puscifer songs for free. If you like what you hear, I suggest that you support the artist by buying the music. It is going to be worth the money.

Some of the best times to return to, especially when Ya'll wanna induce lucid dreams. 'Preciate ya keeping the medium alive!

The album was great! The sound quality of the vinyl was quite excellent on my system, which has fairly decent resolution. As far as the content, I personally really liked the musical compositions and the way the sound was engineered. The album overall had a nice kind of clean, Goth / Industrial sound. I like the way the vocals were treated and how they sounded. Kind of a slightly less harsher NIN sound, to give you somewhat of an idea. So, if you like that kind of thing like I really do, then you should really like this album! It is the first of theirs that I have bought. I really think too that spreading the album over 2 LPs really enhances the dynamics of the sound quality too.

Ahhh the enigmatic Maynard James Keenan releases not only another stellar album but another side project infamously know as Puscifer. While MJK sticks to his mysterious ways in this project he also much to my suprise does not take it too seriously hence the lyrics to most of the tracks.Songs like Queen B,DoZo,Vagina Mine and Drunk with Power are perfect examples in this case. Other tracks like Trekka,The Undertaker and Indigo Children show a case of making some kind of point in the song and at the same time keep a dark feel to an electronic groove trance if that makes any sense at all. As I said before this project was not meant to be taken seriously like Tool or theraputic like A Perfect Circle. And because of that fans of one or both of these bands may not find Puscifer worthy of their attention. But if you're looking for something different this album would be the way to go.Give the album a couple of listens. It may grow on you...

Easily the best album I've heard this year. You'll have to excuse me as the album is two years old, and I only discovered it now, but regardless, I'll express my unfiltered enthusiasm two years late and maybe a dollar short. This album isn't metal, and it's not really rock. It's not country or easy listening. It's not polka, jazz or pop. Puscifer has defined its own genre, and while I consider myself somewhat liberal with description and pros, I find myself at a loss when trying to define what it is I felt the first time the disc spun its way through the 10 tracks that make up "V is for Vagina". All I know is I liked it - a lot. It's like a slow trip while riding a cool buzz. "Momma Sed" is the track that defines the album, but there isn't a single bad track. I don't care what kind of music defines you, there is something in here for everyone. Disregard the lame band-name (Puscifer) and the equally immature album title, and enjoy the content. You will not be disappointed.

A lot of Tool and Puscifer LPs aren't the best pressings in my collection, some flat out suck, but this album actually sounds pretty good. Nice and flat, thicker than average and very little surface noice. Wish all my Tool and Puscifer albums sounded as good as this one.

Weird but listenable side-project from Tool man

Prior to the release of this album, Maynard James Keenan was quoted to have said that sometimes he just wants to hear Gnarls Barkley. Hey - it's no crime, but when these words come from a man responsible for some of the most challenging, complex music and wilfully obtuse lyrics of recent years it's not surprising that a few people raised their eyebrows when they heard about the enigmatic Tool/A Perfect Circle man's latest musical venture. Puscifer, in contrast to both of the aforementioned bands, should be considered light relief, with its abundance of sleazy references and absence of heavy guitars. There's no denying the catchiness of some these tracks, either: the twangy, countrified leanings of 'Momma Sed', for example, are coupled with a dancey beat and Keenan's unmistakable emotive croon. 'Drunk With Power', meanwhile, sees him doing a Mike Patton-esque characterisation/p*ss-take of a washed-up pimp daddy over a thick, NIN-style bass-line to great effect. Elsewhere, the influences are less apparent, but as you would perhaps expect with Keenan, it's an eclectic mix of sounds and style that makes up the majority of this album. It's whimsical and fun in places, darker and more earnest in others. Take for example, 'Sour Grapes', on which Maynard's haunting, ethereal vocals play second fiddle to the righteous words of a gospel preacher. It's surprisingly stirring stuff, the heavy sentiment of the closing refrain ("It's always gonna be sour grapes with you, boy; until you get right with Jesus") offset by the last track - a cheeky little number in which Keenan moans lasciviously that "Jesus is coming, and so am I"... Many fans of his main band will no doubt be horrified by this, and Puscifer's appeal is unlikely to stretch beyond the "featuring the guy out of Tool" tag, which, coupled with the fact that this is released on an independent label, means that approximately 12 people will buy this. Shame. Matt Pucci

One of my favourite albums of all time. A hypnotic masterpiece

Alternative rock

I say rock, but this really goes more to the alternative side. Puscifer is a side project of Maynard James Keenan, known for his work with the bands Tool and A Perfect Circle. I find his work amazing, a real mix, if you want to hear something refreshing, then this is for you, some really powerful tracks and this has become another valued CD to my collection.

Yup, it's great. I'm a huge Tool fan and although the 2 aren't really comparable in terms of style they are comparable in the way of quality musicianship and fantastic songs. It's brilliant.

One of Puscifer's best albums, well produced with a good variety of tracks. Maynard's voice is great as usual.

"V" Is for Vagina is the debut studio album by Maynard James Keenan's side project Puscifer, released on October 30, 2007 (2007-10-30). The album features a significantly different, electronic sound and arrangements than Keenan's other bands: the progressive Tool and alternative A Perfect Circle. Keenan himself compared the sound of "V" is for Vagina to "driving around in your car listening to those old Motown hits, James Brown, and cool R&B stuff". Release The album was preceded by a non-album, retail-only single called "Cuntry Boner… read more
