The Otaku family was founded by Otaku Shiko , daughter of Otaku , [1] a follower of the Kami Shinjo , a skilled warrior, and the Unicorn Thunder on the Day of Thunder . The family were later renamed the Utaku family during Otaku Xieng Chi 's reign.

During the Ki-Rin's Exodus the families of the Ki-Rin Clan were divided into four groups after the War with the Rocs to search for a passage home. The Otaku run afoul of their old enemies from the City of Sorcerers and discovered that they had learned to remove their hearts from their bodies to ensure their immortality as Khadi . [2]

The following are the known daimyo of the Utaku family, including those who bore the Otaku name before the change.

The following are the vassal families of the Utaku:

In everything they did, the Utaku were fast, intense, and convinced. They had a reputations as swift and deadly warriors, which relied in their intense train which few could match. [3]

The Utaku mon was a plain field of pale purple. It represented the original
Otaku's silence, but could also be taken to represent her purity of purpose. [4]

The Otaku, known for being people of few words as their founder, wrote some of the most beautiful and highly-regarded poetry of Rokugan . [4]

While Otaku was the family founder, it was Otaku Shiko who actually laid down and codified many of the family's martial traditions that became the Utaku Battle Maiden school. It was Shiko, who had returned through Oblivion's Gate in 1133 , who declared that [5] the family would change its name in order to renew their vows to the Kami Shinjo, becoming the Utaku family . [6] The family was strictly matriarchal. No male Utaku had ever been daimyo of the family, and the men were not allowed to ride the Utaku steeds into combat. [7]

Although it was a well known fact that Utaku men might not ride the family's great steeds into battle, many erroneously assumed this means that Utaku men did not ride at all. Utaku (of both sexes) laugh when they heard this. Utaku men were the greatest horse breeders and stable masters in all of Rokugan. Riding was a necessary part of maintaining and training quality steeds. Male Utaku were just not trained in mounted combat, leaving that honor to the women of the family. [8]

The Utaku claimed the endless plains in the northeastern regions of Unicorn lands as their own, which had the fewest natural resources among the clan's lands. They were considered the most civilized of any Unicorn region, only the Utaku had permanently settled the vast majority of their land. [9]

Lore question : non-unicorn utaku battle maiden ?
Rokugan, which meant Emerald Land in the language of the Celestial Heavens, is the central location of the Legend of the Five Rings universe and its ruling Rokugani Empire's culture is similar to that of feudal Japan. Rokugan is sometimes referred to as the Emerald Empire. Rokugani society is also based on aspects of other Asian cultures such as China and India, as well as their magical systems and mythical beasts.

Hello everyone ! I was wondering if it's possible for other clans to join the battle maidens ? I assume it'z very rare, but are there lore examples of this ? Thanks !
If a female samurai from another Clan were to be allowed, it would be stunningly difficult. She would basically need to be descended from an Utaku to start with and would likely need to marry into the Family and Clan prior to training.
We're talking the sort of thing where they go back into her ancestry and find out the young lady has Utaku Blood (from a mother side's of course) that is fairly direct back to the Unicorn, she is already a skilled rider (at a young age too), and the Utaku have a male that's going to end a line of Utaku Battle Maidens if he comes of age, AND there's no other Utaku females around to marry him to in Clan.
In that case, it's possible they may take this prodigy of their bloodline, marry the two, raise and train her to be an Utaku, and then she can be a Battle Maiden. But she's still likely to be seen as an outsider (ironic for the Unicorn) and not well trusted until she truly proves herself, either in battle or through some feat or act of true selfless love of the Family.
But that's the kind of thing that happens once every few generations, would make for an amazing story/legend, and likely ends with the young lass either becoming a venerated hero of the Clan or else a degenerate Yokai with a terrible unfulfilled duty.
Actually, that sounds kind of awesome.
You could go the spiritual route. If there was a young person who appeared to be touched, related to or extremely favored by Namaku the Fortune of Horses? Or maybe they're incredibly skilled at horses at a young age and is obviously the favored of Hachiman the Fortune of Battle? Or a favored of one of the Wind Fortunes?
I think even in this case this person is more suited to Shinjo, then Utaku. Well, but if some Utaku steed with dead raider form bond with this person, then maybe Utaku can think twice.
Interesting idea, I could well see a dragon doing this, though I suppose they don't have many horses in their mountains
Pretty sure there's no examples of Utaku men being accepted, let alone samurai from other clans. Even the emperor, with his stable of Utaku steeds, isn't actually taught the secret of riding one. Though I wouldn't strictly expect it to be impossible under new lore. Just quite unlikely.
I cannot think of a lore example. Still, it might not be strictly impossible for a suitably gifted outsider to petition the school for permission, but they have to have a pretty good reason for acceptance. Some Unicorn blood (i.e. parent or grandparent), ideally a Utaku, could help a lot, as could another personal connection to a member of the family - i.e. childhood friends, being owed a debt of honor, etc. In the end, your character should be the kind of girl that the Utaku want in their ranks, and give them a good excuse to bend the rules.
I am not saying they never have outsider candidates, but they hold themselves to a high standard and it would be even higher for any outsider. She will most likely be expected to stay with the family, however, probably by marriage or adoption.

Concerning the matter in the title: I'm wondering (for the sake of the argument) how to fully benefit from it. Rules as written, you get a sucess per range band travelled -pg 86-. In mass battles you got that covered, always considered to have moved the maximum. The skirmish is where the problem lies. The only way I could find to actually move 5 range band (and attack) in the same round is pretty impractical.
You get to move 1 range band freely. -pg 262-
In water stance you can use one of your actions to move another. Thats 2. -pg 251-
Plus, using two opportunities to move during an attack check, an additional one, you would get to 3. -pg 328-
The fourth and fifth (or even the sixth) would be accomplishable by using four, six and eight opportunities respectively.
Thats just not a very appealing prospect. Even just 4 opportunities in exchange for 2 bonus sucesses... I don't know.
Maybe i'm being short sighted here, but i would love to hear someone else's input over all this. I thought about using heartpiercing strike but that is very limiting. One opportunity only (and it's the fire stance) -pg 176-. Anyway, I hope someone can shed some light on it. I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
It basically sounds like you are miffed that you won't get 5 successes every time in a skirmish. Even stepping back and forth in Water stance just to get 2 success I think is pretty good deal.
It is a good deal! I'm debating for the sake of the argument only.
The issue is that a leve 3 maiden can use a 2 speed move just as effectively as a level 5 maiden. As a player, it would suck to get a new school rank and simply not care because I know I couldn’t move 5.
OP it's important to note that you get bonus successes from range bands moved, not successes. So you can't use it to reach a high TN, just tack on successes to an already successful check.
The water opportunity is a single use opportunity. It doesn't have the +
But yeah, I have had this similar issue, how do you get to 6 range bands in 1 round. As you have pointed out, in water stance we have the basic move and the maneuver to get us to 2 very consistently. You can spend 2 water opportunity to get to 3, but that is not necessarily a good trade if you could just keep another success instead. A rank 6 battle maiden may move a range band after successfully defending against damage. So even with all of that you are still only at 4. To get above that you really need help from other people(and technically you need help from an attacker to proc the rank 6 tech). The shuji slippery maneuvers can help you to move 1 range band outside of your turn. A water shugenja can use the rushing wave to propel you 1 range band + bonus successes. Finally an air shugenja could use grasp of the air dragon to propel you air ring + bonus success range bands.
Generally speaking, you are looking at 1-2 bonus successes. Which seems not great in light of the fact that you could get 6, but I think for the battle maiden that is probably still ok. A hidden perk of the battle maiden school is that the Utaku steed grants its rider skilled assistance on martial checks. Also mounts grant bonus successes equal to their water ring on movement actions. Flowing water strike, heartpiercing strike and iaijutsu cut: crossing blade are all movement actions. So you could take a your basic move, take an unrolled maneuver and flowing water strike from the back of your horse for +5 bonus successes and +1 skilled assistance at rank 3. That seems pretty strong compared to other schools
That iaijutsu strike from horseback lol. I know its a thing, and very strong, just... So wrong :) Edit; especially done with a Knife :D
and Flowing Water Strike doesn't get anything from bonus successes. so I guess it works for HPS and Crossing Cut...
obviously, the mounted rule was meant only for the Maneuvre check and not "all movement actions" (ever heard of shuji? or mass battle rules? oof). but that is another story...
As a disclaimer, this is about to get stupid rules lawyer-ey.
Water stance gives you an extra action that "does not require a check". The maneuver action has a voluntary check associated with it, but it is completely optional , which technically means it's an action that does not require a check - and the Water stance action doesn't say you can't make checks, just that the action cannot require one.
Add onto that the fact that the Battle Maidens usually fight atop horses, which give you the benefits (p. 326, sidebar) of 1: Adding the mount's water ring as bonus successes to a successful maneuver check (in the case of the Utaku steed, that's 3), and 2: allowing the rider to use Survival in place of Fitness for any Fitness checks they make when mounted (if that helps your character at all).
