Utah State Basketball Stuns Nation with Historic Upset Over No. 1 Ranked Team

LOGAN, UT — March 15, 2024 — In a game that will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in Utah State basketball history, the Aggies pulled off a stunning upset against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, defeating the defending champions 78-76 in a thrilling overtime finish at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

The Aggies, led by head coach Ryan Odom, entered the game as heavy underdogs, facing a team that had only lost twice all season. However, Utah State’s relentless defense and clutch shooting propelled them to victory in front of a raucous home crowd that stormed the court after the final buzzer.

Senior guard Steven Ashworth was the hero of the night, scoring a career-high 32 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with just 1.2 seconds left in overtime. Ashworth, who has been the heart and soul of the team all season, credited the win to the team’s resilience and belief in each other.

'We knew we had nothing to lose and everything to gain,' Ashworth said in a post-game interview. 'This is what we’ve been working for all season. To do it in front of our fans, in this arena, it’s just surreal.'

The Aggies’ defense also played a pivotal role, holding the nation’s top-scoring offense to its lowest point total of the season. Junior forward Taylor Funk anchored the defense with 12 rebounds and three blocks, while sophomore guard Max Shulga provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and five assists.

The victory marks Utah State’s first win over a No. 1 ranked team in program history and is expected to significantly boost their seeding in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Fans and analysts alike are now buzzing about the Aggies’ potential to make a deep run in March Madness.
