Coconut oil is actually one of the best options when it comes to an alternative lube, because it has moisturizing qualities, doesn’t contain any irritating additives, and is a natural antimicrobial substance. Coconut oil also has a number of applications in the bedroom that make it one of the best things to keep on your bedside table.
This specialty oil has gained considerable popularity in recent years as an element of healthy eating , as well as certain cosmetic and beauty applications, but it is not nearly as well known as a sexual lubricant. Some people do swear by it, however, due to its numerous benefits in the bedroom.

Coconut oil can be used as a lubricant both during foreplay and sexual intercourse. Women often choose to use coconut oil if they struggle with vaginal dryness, even when stimulated by their partner. Use two fingers to apply a small amount of coconut oil on the outer and inner lips of your vagina before intercourse. Only a small amount is needed, or else you will have a buildup of oil in the vagina, which can be a breeding ground for unwanted pathogens. Some women also experience yeast infections on a regular basis, which may be indicative of an overly sensitive vagina or a higher risk of infection. In such a case, the anti-fungal and antibacterial nature of coconut oil could actually throw off the pH balance of your vagina, increasing your likelihood of contracting infections. [6]
For both men and women, pay close attention to the effect of coconut oil on the skin. Allergies to this specialty oil are rare, but they do occur. When you first begin using this oil as a lubricant, apply only small amounts to check if you are allergic to the oil.

Here's what to know before you use it in bed.
Maybe you’ve been in the heat of the moment and realized you didn’t have any lube , leading to frantic scrounging around the kitchen for an alternative to use in a pinch . Or maybe you've been looking for an all-natural lube, just because. In either case, you may be wondering: Can I use coconut oil as a natural lube alternative?
Coconut oil is generally safe and effective to use as a lubricant, says Michael Ingber , MD, a urologist and urogynecologist at Garden State Urology. However, there are a few things you should know before you decide to slather it on and hop into bed. Here are the pros and cons of opting for coconut oil as a lubricant.
Some lubes on the market contain alcohol (you'll typically see an ingredient ending in "-ol," like "phenoxyethanol"). While alcohol can provide a “cooling” sensation during sex or masturbation, Ingber warns that lubricants with alcohol can dry out mucosal surfaces, which are predominantly found in the anus and vagina. This can cause pain, UTIs, or yeast infections.
Glycerin, a byproduct of sugar, is sometimes found in lube, and it's not recommended for people with vaginas. "It can often serve as a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria," Ingber says. (Glycerin is one of the predominant ingredients in K-Y Jelly and it can also be found in some JO lubricants .)
While propylene glycol doesn't seem to be incredibly prevalent, it still can be found in some more common lubes, including in few of Astroglide's lubricants. Propylene glycol is a chemical used in antifreeze, as well as a preservative, explains Ingber. “In general, it is safe, but some patients can develop a sensitivity to it, so it’s better to avoid if possible.”
When it comes to texture, Ingber says many of his clients end up trying and preferring coconut oil to water-based and silicone-based lubricants that you can buy over the counter. Some folks also prefer the taste and smell.
The typical vaginal pH is "acidic" at around a level 4 before menopause, explains Ingber. Many of the coconut oils have a pH of 5.5 to 7.5, which means if anything, it is alkalinizing the vagina, or making it more “basic.”
“So we always caution patients to do some trial and error when trying out coconut oil,” says Ingber. “If they notice malodorous discharge after sex, or increased incidence of yeast infections, or bacterial vaginosis (overgrowth of vaginal bacteria), it may not be the best idea to continue use.”
Ingber notes that coconut oil can degrade latex, increasing the likelihood that a latex condom will tear during intercourse. If you're using a latex condoms, you shouldn't use coconut oil as lube—instead, opt for water-based or silicone-based lube.
“Our patients use coconut oil for penis-masturbation a ton,” says Ingber. “It works great, but we have had a few patients whom we recommended coconut oil to and noticed the development of a rash.” Ingber notes this was likely an allergy, and it quickly resolved when the men stopped using the oil.

We all know that things can get a little dry down under once we reach perimenopause. Vaginal dryness can be exceptionally uncomfortable, and make intercourse nearly impossible. And yes, many women have used it to help soothe and smooth their vulva and vagina.
Many women are turning towards coconut oil as a lubricant. Coconut oil tends to appeal to women because it is natural and free of certain chemicals that may be found in other products. Similarly, the product goes on smooth, does not clump, and tends to get more moist with body heat. While it seems like a no brainer, there are some drawbacks to using coconut oil for sex.
There have been no scientific studies examining coconut oil as lube. All of the information available at this point is anecdotal and based on personal experiences. Therefore, coconut oil has not been scientifically proven to be safe and effective in treating vaginal dryness.
Coconut oil can break down latex condoms. Therefore, if you are using latex condoms for STD or pregnancy prevention, it is important to use a water-based or silicone-based lubricant instead.
You may be at greater risk for a vaginal infection. Coconut oil has a higher pH than your vagina. Your vagina is quite acidic, whereas coconut oil is more alkaline. This difference in pH can disrupt the normal pH of your vagina, putting you at greater risk for bacterial and yeast infections. Similarly, if you use too much coconut oil, it can create a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast to replicate and thrive.
Although rare, coconut can cause an allergic reaction. If you have a known coconut allergy, avoid using coconut oil entirely. If you are unsure if you are allergic, apply a small patch of coconut on your arm or thigh and wait 24-48 hours to see if you have a reaction on your skin.
The vagina tends to atrophy and dry once estrogen levels decline in menopause. Some women do apply coconut oil to their vulvas and vaginas to moisturize as opposed to using a vaginal moisturizer or even low-dose vaginal estrogen creams, tablets, and rings. However, if you choose to use coconut oil to keep things moist, remember there is little evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of this product.
If you choose to try coconut oil as a lube, start using it in small quantities. This will allow you to experiment with it and will also minimize disruption in your vaginal pH. If you are using coconut oil just to moisturize, consider applying a small amount once-daily in the beginning. Some women find using coconut oil in the bathtub or shower is an alternative to soap and has the added benefit of moisturizing, even in the nether regions.
On a final note, if you do choose to use coconut oil as a personal lubricant or moisturizer, be aware that the oil may stain your sheets and clothing. Applying baking soda for at least an hour can help lift the stain.
