The location privacy settings can help to ensure that only the programs you want to use location services actually are. The "your location is currently in use" icon is a helpful notification so you know exactly when an app is using these location services.
As well as the Windows settings for Location, your web browser will also have a setting for location, if you open the Settings page in your browser, type location in the search box, and you will find the location settings.
