Upgrading to Tata Sky Broadband 200 Mbps

Our three month plan for Tata Sky Broadband was coming to an end by Friday October 9th. When I was looking up the website for renewing my service, I noticed that Tata Sky had introduced 200 Mbps plan. More importantly, the new plans with higher speeds were cheaper than the older plans! The option to upgrade to higher speeds was tempting. Not that 100 Mbps is a slow speed. Live streaming of IPL matches in Full HD mode is possible after all at that speed. Below are the pricing plans for a 3 month service period as on October 2020:

Do your homework!

There were may questions that needed to be answered before I could decide to upgrade. Some of them were:

a. Are there any charges for the upgrade to a higher plan? (Answer is no)

b. Will the existing Nokia router be adequate for the higher speeds? (Answer is Yes- this model can handle up to 1 Gbps speeds or higher.

c. How do I upgrade ? (I could not do so via the website. In that case, will I have to dial the Call centre or use Tata Sky Broadband app?)

I had several discussions within the residents group in my neighbourhood. One of my neighbours noted something that stood out: the App is extremely handy tool for plan upgrades, account management, etc. I reluctantly installed the app on my standby phone, and was positively surprised. 

First, I recharged my account with INR 3,600- more than enough to cover three months (October- January 2020). A couple of days later, I used the App for Tata sky to upgrade the plan. 

Yesterday night that is on October 9th, my Broadband plan got upgraded to 200 Mbps. I thought of sharing the below results with you.

These tests were run between 4 AM and 5 AM IST on October 10th. I used two different services: speedtest.net and speed.cloudflare.com

Wrapping it all up

The process of upgrade was easy, and I am quite happy with the speeds I am getting now. The reliability of the service needs to be checked however: in the old plan, service disruptions were quite regular. Time will tell if this upgrade was a welcome decision or not.

Update: Three days later, I am still getting consistent speeds: though at 6 AM, upload speeds are better.
