šŸŽƒĀ Unverified Tokens in Tonkeeper

Tonkeeper Team

In our latest release, Tonkeeper 3.6 we have added explicit markers for unverified tokens. This is an important update that we’ve made for the security of all our users.

TON is an open network, and Tonkeeper is a non-custodial wallet that permits unlimited access to the entire network. This means that users may send and receive any kind of asset, without asking anyone’s permission.

Recently a lot of scammers appeared on the network producing all sorts of fake tokens and tricking people into paying for them. That’s why we are making changes to Tonkeeper and Tonviewer to make TON safer to use for most people and not interfere with your freedom to transact.

Well-known and unverified tokens

For the last year and a half TON community helps us to maintain a list of well-known assets in the TON ecosystem so we can mark any other tokens that look like those listed as ā€œscamā€. Unfortunately, this simple procedure is no longer adequate because scammers are now more inventive and chasing them manually is a loser’s game.

With the new release we are adding ā€œunverifiedā€ mark to all tokens not listed in the well-known repository. You may still view, transfer and receive those tokens without any issue. But if you intend to receive a popular stablecoin and it’s marked ā€œunverifiedā€, you should double-check what you are receiving.

What is a well-known asset?

The repository of well-known assets is nothing more than ā€œpopularā€. It does not mean that we or anyone else endorses those assets or guarantees their value. The role of this registry is to help distinguish fake tokens from the original ones, regardless of their purpose or value.

What is unverified asset?

The asset that is not well known and not verified by anyone. This is a fair description for most lesser known assets or technical tokens, but it truly helps to detect fakes.

How do I mark my token as well-known?

Please file a pull-request to https://github.com/tonkeeper/ton-assets/ and we’ll list your token as known. We will do a simple and mostly automated check that this token does not impersonate other tokens. We are not offering any endorsement by adding your token to the list and we reserve the right to remove any of them at any time.

Use Tonkeeper safely

TON is a fantastic innovative medium where incredibly smart people build the future together. But being a completely open environment, you will sometimes face scammers and spammers. Do not enter your wallet seed phrase on any sites, do not follow links from unknown senders and check the origin of the assets you buy. Be safe and enjoy TON!
