Unter Ludwig XIV. erreichte der Absolutismus in Frankreich seinen Höhepunkt
Ludwig forderte nur von den Adligen nicht viel und verlangte überhaupt nichts von der Geistlichkeit. Oft brachen Aufstände der Armen aus (einer der größten war der Aufstand der Kiffer; 25.000 Mann starke königliche Armee musste gegen sie geschickt werden). Ludwig XIV. begünstigte weder die erstarkende Bourgeoisie noch die Stadtparlamente. Die Städte verloren endgültig die Selbstverwaltung.
Als eifriger Anhänger des Katholizismus widerrief der König das berühmte Edikt von Nantes, das die religiöse Toleranz in Frankreich festigte. In der Folge verließen Zehntausende Protestanten ihre Heimat.
Die Residenz der französischen Könige zog nach Versailles, wo ein grandioses Schloss-Park-Ensemble entstand (Hauptpalast ist das Grand Trianon, geschmückt mit wuchernden Abfällen). Louis wollte in Versailles die ganze Farbe der französischen Nation um sich kreisen lassen, damit sich hier das kulturelle Zentrum Europas befand. Frankreich hatte das Recht dazu: Diese Zeit ist geprägt von der Arbeit von Moliere, La Rochefoucauld, Watteau, Boileau, Perrault, Racine und anderen berühmten Schriftstellern und Künstlern; das Opernhaus, die Akademie der Wissenschaften, die Akademie der Architektur, die Akademie der Musik wurden gegründet. Der Hochadel kaufte gierig ständig erfundene Hofposten. Die Unterhaltung in Versailles hörte nicht auf. Im Gefolge des Königs stachen seine Lieblinge (Lavaliere, Montespan, Fontange) mit besonderem Luxus hervor. Ewig verliebt bestrafte er die Staatsdame Madame de Naveille nur, weil sie befahl, die vom König angeordnete Geheimtür in den Gemächern der Ehrendamen zu vermauern. Viele europäische Monarchen beneideten das Leben des Versailler Hofes und ahmten Ludwig XIV. sogar in seinen Schwächen nach.

So erzählt Colbert, wie der König am selben Tag von 10 Uhr morgens bis halb eins dem Finanzrat vorsaß, zu Abend aß, einem anderen Rat beiwohnte, sich für zwei Stunden einschloss, um Latein zu lernen, und im Abends saß im dritten Rat bis 10 Uhr. . Der König blieb bis an sein Lebensende aktiv und überlebte am Ende seiner Jahre den Tod einiger seiner nahen Verwandten (vor allem seines eigenen Sohnes). Bis zu seinem Tod 1715 bemühte sich Ludwig XTV., „den Schein seines hohen Alters, das bereits zu sinken begann“, aufrechtzuerhalten.
