Does underwear turn you on? Do you buy underwear even when you don’t need any more? Have you ever wanted to sniff your best friend’s boxer-briefs ? It’s perfectly normal -- some studies, according to Men’s Journal , have shown that testosterone could be detectable through scent. If you’ve ever fantasized about going through your buddy’s hamper for that sweaty pair he wore at the gym , that’s most likely why: because you can smell his testosterone. As for your ever-expanding collection of briefs, chances are you’re just preparing to entice your boyfriend or a potential lover.
Your desire is perfectly normal. Embrace it. Our bodies produce different chemicals to attract a mate. When you find yourself appreciating a pair of underwear, it’s precisely those chemicals at work. In one study reported in the Scientific American, bodily odors appeared to boost sexual attraction.
As long as you’re not harming anyone and you put your friend or roommate’s underwear back where you found it, it’s okay to appreciate it if it turns you on. Some studies reveal a possible connection between scent and compatibility -- if you find something irresistible about his natural scent, one theory, according to The New York Times, is that you might be simply be smelling his attractiveness.
Some might call this a bit taboo or gross. But as those with an underwear fetish understand, it’s nothing more than scent and sensibility -- appreciating what nature intended. The connection between smell and sexual attraction is clear.
Our obsession with underwear may also have something to do with the fact that it’s incredibly private. When you get hands on your best friend’s jockstrap, in addition to his scent, there’s something erotic about knowing you have access to something others don’t.
Here are a few ways to embrace your underwear fetish:
If you’ve been too shy to talk to your lover about your fetish, a good way to warm up to the conversation is by surprising him with a new pair of sexy skivvies. If you’re a true hardcore underwear fetishist, you’ll appreciate your boyfriend’s scent after he comes home from a long day of work. Or better yet, enjoy a workout together and embrace your fetish together afterwards.
Don’t have a significant other to share your fetish with? Find a buddy through online groups such as Reddit or even on Grindr. No doubt you’ll find someone who appreciates the smell of fresh man scent as much as you do.
An underwear fetish isn’t just about appreciating other people’s underwear, but also your own. Change it up. Try on a jock strap. Wear briefs for a month instead of boxer-briefs. Always wondered what a thong feels like? Go for it.
Most importantly, have fun and stay safe!

With appliances like used lingerie vending machines and attractions like “Love Hotels,” it’s clear some Japanese don’t regard unconventional sexuality as very taboo as the rest of the world. Not only is there a subculture in Japan embracing all things sexually taboo, apparently they research it. A recent study from the island nation used MRI scans to find exactly what was causing a man's underwear fetish. The conclusion? Decreased blood flow to the brain.
The test subject of the Japanese study is arguably more interesting than the actual results. According to Discover Magazine , the 24-year-old patient was referred to the hospital after being caught once again stealing women’s underwear. “The patient had stolen women’s underwear on multiple occasions since the age of 11 years, although he showed no interest in underwear that belonged to his mother, sister, and girlfriend's,” explained lead researcher Koji Masuda and their colleagues.
The researchers used a Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scan of the patient’s brain to see if there was a biological explanation for his abnormal obsession. The scan revealed that he did, in fact, have a slightly less than normal brain layout. The cerebral blood flow was decreased in the temporal and occipital lobes.
However, as pointed out by Discover , this decrease in blood flow may or may not have anything to do with the patient's extracurricular activities. Still, the researchers went on to “diagnose” the patient with fetishism, based on a combination of his history and the brain scan’s results. According to the report, he went on to be “successfully treated with behavioral therapy.”
As noted by Discover , this particular study lacked multiple comparisons in their statistical testing, which greatly comprised the accuracy of their results. The findings, although interesting, explain a correlation between brain flow and fetishes, rather than causation. Further research is required before any definitive results may be concluded.
Fetishism is characterized as a disorder when there is a pathological assignment of sexual fixation, fantasies, or behaviors toward an inanimate object. As explained by Psychology Today , the object of affection is commonly an item of clothing, such as a high-heeled shoe, or in this case, female underwear.
As for explaining the cause of fetishes, most experts agree that they begin early in life due to an incident, not a biological oddity. Fetishes can be a hindrance, such as in the case of this young Japanese man constantly getting arrested, or in relationships where one partner finds themselves incompatible with the other’s fetish. For the most part, though, they are regarded as harmless and not considered as a condition warranting treatment.

Lee Chee Kin's is said to be suffering from a physiological compulsive disorder, in which a person has the sexual desire to steal ladies underwear for personal wear or the sexual pleasure of smelling
Singapore—Lee Chee Kin was featured in the news on Monday (May 18) for having been charged on multiple counts, including theft, criminal trespass, and the breach of COVID-19 regulations.
What the 39-year-old Mr Lee had been stealing was underwear, and not for the first time either. From April 2018 to April 2020, Mr Lee had gone out numerous times to take bras and panties from different women.
Mr Lee has entered a guilty plea to 10 charges of theft, criminal trespass, unauthorised access to computer material, and a breach of COVID-19 regulations, with another 14 charges to be considered as well.
According to Kwang Jia Min, the Deputy Public Prosecutor on the case, “The accused used the stolen bras and panties for his own sexual gratification.”
The judge on the case has called for the suitability report for a mandatory treatment order, and Mr Lee will be back in court for sentencing on June 1.
According to the prosecutor, it is still unknown whether Mr Lee has a psychiatric condition linked to his theft of women’s underwear.
There is a term for Mr Lee’s condition—melcryptovestimentaphilia. This is defined as “someone who compulsively steals ladies’ panties,” or “a physiological compulsive disorder, in which a person has the sexual desire to steal ladies underwear for personal wear or sexual pleasure of smelling.”
While other sources do not specify a particular colour of underwear that a person with this disorder has, one site says that people who suffer from this condition have an obsession with black underwear.
The same site says that sufferers of the condition do not usually seek treatment for it unless it becomes overly problematic for them. “The majority of people simply learn to accept their fetish and manage to achieve gratification in an appropriate manner.”
For those who do seek treatment, the following therapies are usually applied, psychoanalysis , h ypnosis , b ehavior therapy c ognitive therapy or d rug therapy .
Dr Lim Boon Leng, a psychiatrist, was quoted in TODAY Online last year as saying that there are some people who fixate on a non-living object as the primary means of sexual gratification.
“It has to cause a problem in the person’s life. For example, some married men don’t engage in proper sexual activities with their wives, and this can lead to marital issues when their wives catch them with the objects,” said Dr Lim.
An average of 19 diagnosed cases of such fetishes has been diagnosed at the IMH yearly from 2014 to 2018.
The psychiatrist added that people who suffer from this kind of disorder may feel guilt or other negative emotions about it. “The urge can be quite strong and they feel the need to do it in order to get sexual gratification but yet, they know it’s not something condoned by society. They may feel guilty about it, particularly if they have partners,” he said. —/TISG
