Understanding The Different eBay Auction Types
Over the years, eBay has introduced all sorts of different auction types, in an effort to give people more options when buying and selling their stuff on eBay.
There are many people who do not like the idea of their item being sold at a much lower price than they claim. Likewise, there are people who have hundreds of the same item and don’t want to sell them individually.
This email gives you an overview of the different types of auctions and how to spot them.
Normal Auctions
These are the bread and butter of eBay, the auctions that everyone knows: you bid, others outbid you, you outbid them, and the winner gets the item. Simple.
reserve auctions
Reserve auctions are for sellers who don’t want their items to sell for less than a certain price, a concept you’ll be familiar with if you’re familiar with real auctions.
They work just like regular auctions on eBay, except you’ll be notified if your bid didn’t reach the reserve price set by the seller. If no one is willing to pay this price, the auction is canceled and the seller keeps the item.
You can spot these auctions by looking for “Reservation Not Satisfied” or “Reservation Satisfied” written next to the current bid on an item’s description page.
Fixed Price Auctions (“Buy It Now”)
Auctions Buy it now! they can work in two ways. A seller can add a Buy It Now button. to a normal auction, which means you can choose to bid normally or simply pay the asking price and skip the entire bidding process.
However, some sellers now do away with the auction process altogether and simply list all of their items at a fixed price. eBay recently added a twist to fixed-price auctions: the ‘best deal’.
This means you can negotiate a price with someone offering their items using Buy It Now, which could be a great way to get a bargain on things that don’t seem to be selling.
Fixed price auctions are easy to spot as they have a small “Buy It Now” logo next to or in place of the current number of bids on the search listings page.
Multiple item auctions (‘Dutch’)
These are auctions where a seller sells more than one of a certain item. Dutch auctions can be held by bid.
Buyers bid a price and say how many items they want, and then everyone pays the lowest price offered by one of the winning bidders. If you’re having trouble understanding that, don’t worry, everyone else is too! These auctions are very rare.
What is more common is when a seller has a lot of an item and lists it using a combination of two auction types: a multi-item fixed price auction. This just means that they say how many they have and offer them at a fixed price. You can enter how many you want and then just click Buy Now to get them.

Your rights as an eBay buyer
When you buy things on eBay, you pay the seller before they ship anything to you. This means that you, as a buyer, are vulnerable to all sorts of problems. You may not receive the items you paid for or the items may be damaged or defective. Luckily, you have two very important rights when you shop on eBay.
The right to receive your item
Maybe the seller never shipped the item, or maybe it got lost in the mail. Whatever happens, you paid for the item. If it doesn’t arrive in the mail as described, you’re entitled to a replacement or refund, whether it’s the seller’s fault or not.
Just because you bought something on eBay doesn’t mean you don’t have exactly the same rights that you would if you bought it in a store (these rights are pretty much the same all over the world).
Also, under eBay’s rules, the seller can’t change their mind about selling you the item: once the auction ends, it becomes a contract: you must buy and they must sell, or face eBay penalties.
The right to have your item as described in the auction
Sometimes sellers don’t wrap items properly and thus they break. Occasionally they write descriptions that are misleading or just plain wrong to begin with, leaving out vital details that would have made you change your mind about the purchase. If this happens to you, you are again entitled to a replacement or refund.
So how do I use my rights?
First, you need to discuss it with the seller; most will respond as they don’t want their reputation damaged when an upset buyer leaves negative feedback for all their future buyers to see. If that doesn’t work, report it to eBay.
While eBay doesn’t have many people who handle complaints, they do have a relatively effective set of automated processes for handling common issues buyers and sellers have with each other.
Finally, if that doesn’t work, you should seek advice from consumer groups in your country and, as a last resort, from the police. However, you should never have to go that far: problems on eBay that cannot be easily resolved are extremely rare.
don’t be too fast
Remember not to get too upset and unfair to the seller – good sellers agreed to give me refunds for undelivered items, only to find out a few weeks later that they were being held up at the post office!
Always do your best to communicate and think about anything that could have gone wrong – eBay works best when buyers and sellers solve their problems together, rather than reporting them to the authorities right away.

How to check an eBay seller’s reputation (and why you should).
When you buy something from an eBay seller, you’re giving them your money and expecting something in return.
No matter how many security guarantees eBay can offer you, nothing is certain: if you just give your money to scammers all the time without doing any checking, chances are you won’t get all that money back.
This is why you should always check the seller’s reputation or “feedback rating”. This is a quick and easy to read summary of your history as an eBay seller, giving you an idea of whether or not you should trust them with your money. Buying anything is a calculated risk – you want to minimize that risk.
How to check feedback ratings
On each item’s description page, there is a box in the top right corner about the seller, titled “Seller Information.” It contains the name of the seller, their feedback score and their percentage of positive feedback, as well as the stars they have earned.
Different colored stars are awarded to eBay sellers based on their rating, in this sequence: yellow, blue, turquoise, purple, red, green, deep yellow, deep turquoise, deep purple, deep red.
Anyone with a “shooting star” is an experienced eBay member you should be able to trust.
If you click on the seller’s name, you can get a more detailed view of their reputation – their ‘member profile’ page. This page shows the total number of people who gave them a positive or negative rating, as well as a breakdown by time. You can also see a full history of all the comments that have been left on them, with the most recent first.
what to look for
You might assume that anyone with a very high number can be trusted, but that’s not always true. It’s more important to look at your positive feedback percentage, and you really should consider anything below 99% a red flag and investigate further.
Take a look at the first visible page with the most recent transactions: are there any negative comments? What do they say? Take into account the experiences of others, as they could happen to you if you deal with this person.
However, be careful not to unfairly punish sellers if they did bad things in the past on eBay but have since improved. You should look at the breakdown by time and ignore any negative comments left long ago.
Still, though, you should sit up and pay attention if a seller seems to have received an inappropriate amount of negative feedback in the last month or so.
