Underdogs Stun Defending Champions in Thrilling Copa Libertadores Quarterfinal

Buenos Aires, Argentina – May 7, 2025

In a match that will go down in Copa Libertadores history, Ecuadorian underdogs Independiente del Valle pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory over defending champions Fluminense in a dramatic quarterfinal first leg at Estadio Banco Guayaquil.

The visitors, Fluminense, took an early lead with a brilliant strike from veteran striker Germán Cano in the 12th minute. However, Independiente del Valle responded with relentless pressure, equalizing before halftime thanks to a header from young Argentine forward Mateo Fernández.

The second half saw even more drama. Fluminense regained the lead through a controversial penalty converted by Jhon Arias, but Independiente del Valle refused to back down. A spectacular long-range effort from midfielder Kendry Páez—just 18 years old—leveled the score once again, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Then, in the 89th minute, substitute Michael Hoyos completed the comeback with a clinical finish after a defensive error from Fluminense, sealing a historic win for the Ecuadorian side.

'This is what the Libertadores is all about—passion, drama, and the unexpected,' said Independiente del Valle coach Martín Anselmi. 'We know the job isn’t done, but tonight, we showed we can compete with the best.'

Fluminense’s manager Fernando Diniz lamented his team’s defensive lapses but remained confident ahead of the second leg in Rio de Janeiro. 'We made mistakes, but we’re still alive in this tie. Our home crowd will push us forward.'

The return leg is set for next week at the iconic Maracanã Stadium, where Fluminense will need at least a 1-0 win to advance. Meanwhile, Independiente del Valle will look to make history by reaching the semifinals for the third time in their remarkable Libertadores journey.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Boca Juniors and Palmeiras played out a tense 0-0 draw in La Bombonera, while River Plate secured a narrow 1-0 away win over Colombia’s Millonarios.
