The cops were bent and the crims were cool. And together they ran the most exciting street in Australia.
Teenage bouncer John Ibrahim saves Kings Cross bouncer ‘Hammer’ from being clobbered by drunks, earning him a chance meeting with Kings Cross Boss George Freeman, whose mentor-like advice prompts John to take lifechanging matters into his own hands.
Country girl Kim Hollingsworth takes her first steps into prostitution as a result of her abusive boyfriend Trent stealing her money.
Det. Sgt. Trevor Haken sinks deeper into corruption; striking up a deal with Kings Cross Boss, Billy Bayeh, in order to control competition and police raids in the area.
Nightclub Doorman Benny Kassab steps out of King’s Cross Boss Bill Bayeh’s shadow and distributes drugs in secret, creating tension against the Bayeh brothers, and inadvertently prompting an attack on Louis Bayeh’s house.
Louis Bayeh uses his money and police contacts to track down Shaka and Korbage for shooting-up his house; unaware Benny Kassab has turned to Jim Egan and Trevor Haken for assistance, resulting in further complications.
Constable Wendy Jones joins Kings Cross Police, whilst unable to handle the consequences of becoming a whistleblower, Debbie Webb sinks into alcoholism.
Following street-dealer Talal Assaad’s sudden death, John Ibrahim finds himself under police investigation for the alleged accessory to murder of Assaad, whilst his co-accused, Russell Townsend, remains in hiding.
Stalked by Michael, attacked by Constable Les and verbally abused by Constable Andrew, Kim Hollingsworth finally reaches breaking point when friend and fellow ‘working girl’ Wanda is found dead.
Under the weight of a Royal Commission investigation, Trevor Haken’s paranoia reaches new heights. He elects to become a ‘super grass’ in order to protect his family and keep himself out of gaol.
As the Royal Commission investigations reach boiling point, former bent cop Trevor Haken risks his life to expose police corruption in Kings Cross.
As part of the Royal Commission investigators' campaign against corrupt cops Gerry Lloyd recruits drug-pusher Shaka to expose the links between cops and crims.
With the Wood Royal Commission wrapped up, the old lions of the drug trade jailed and the corrupt cops kicked out, Danny "DK" Karam recruits a crew of young western suburbs punks and takes control of the Kings Cross streets.
Drug-dealer Michael "Doc" Kanaan devises a plan to knock-off John Ibrahim and Kiwi Steve to divert suspicion away from him over the murder of Danny"DK" Karam.

When it comes to tales of colourful crims and dodgy cops spiced up with plenty of sex, drugs and violence, we can't, it seems, get enough. At least that's what the producers of the latest series of Underbelly are counting on.
After the hugely successful first series chronicling the hyper-violent Melbourne gang wars between 1995 and 2004 and the less notable second series that was a prequel to the Victorian bloodbath, the producers are returning once more to the well with Underbelly III: the Golden Mile .
On the trail ... Sigrid Thornton joins Underbelly.
This time the setting is Kings Cross and one of the key protagonists is nightclub owner John Ibrahim. Anyone with an interest in recent Sydney history will recognise the familiar names that crop up almost immediately. Graham “Chook” Fowler, Trevor Haken, Bill Bayeh and Kim Hollingsworth all make an early appearance alongside George Freeman and Lenny McPherson.
Like previous series, the latest Underbelly has attracted its share of controversy. For a while, it looked as though the whole series could be scrapped because of legal action from a former Kings Cross policewoman, Wendy Hatfield. Hatfield has gone as far as the Court of Appeal in a bid to be allowed to preview the series so she and her lawyers could decide whether she had been defamed. That case is still awaiting a final determination.
Then there is the lingering question over how much input Ibrahim has been allowed into the way he is portrayed. Producers have denied Ibrahim acted as a “consultant” but he has reportedly been a regular visitor on set and not been shy about offering his opinion.
At the outset we are told the series is “based on events” between 1988 and 1999 but it appears The Golden Mile pays even more distant homage to the facts than the first two series, partly due to legal complications but also to add spice to the narrative.
Thus we have the introduction of characters such as cops Gerry Lloyd (Sigrid Thornton) and Joe Dooley (Wil Traval) and crims Harry “Hammer” Hammoud (Salvatore Coco). And while Thornton's federal police character is supposedly a composite representing several personalities involved at the time, bringing in so many wholly fictional players indicates a marked drift away from Underbelly's “true crime” roots established by the first series, which was was based on a book by journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule.
Sometimes the truth can be too hard to handle, even for a supposedly hard-hitting series such as this. Much of the police corruption in Kings Cross at the time involved protecting organised paedophilia, a subject at once so sad and horrific that it could never become fodder for prime-time entertainment. This is entertainment after all, not documentary. But, the further the Underbelly franchise strays into the wholly fictional, the weaker its claim to be something more than another (slick) good-cop/bad-cop/cool-crim show.
Condemning the series on the basis of the first show would be unfair but Underbelly appears to be mutating into "true-ish crime". That is unlikely to hold the attention of even remotely sophisticated viewers.
Underbelly: the Golden Mile begins on Nine this Sunday at 8.30pm.

Based on real events in Melbourne, Victoria, between 1995 and 2004, Underbelly tells the story of the gangland war, known as the Melbourne gangland killings, between rival factions of Melbourne's criminal underworld.
The Melbourne gangland wars start the night the gangster Alphonse Gangitano, "The Black Prince of Lygon Street", and one of the legendary Carlton Crew gang, murders a low-life crim named Greg Workman at a St Kilda party for the sheer hell of it.
Convinced that Jason Moran was also involved in the nightclub assault, Steve Owens tricks Jason's driver Carl Williams into revealing that he did indeed ferry Jason to and from the scene.
Brothers Jason and Mark Moran decide that the Carlton Crew needs to be pulled into the 21st Century. The Moran brothers do a deadly deal to expand their empire while Carl Williams starts his illegal dealings - in direct competition with Jason Moran.
Carl Williams is caught red-handed whilst double-crossing the fearsome Moran brothers; the underworld is in an uproar over the mystery source of cheap drugs.
Carl Williams begins his deadly revenge on the crime-controlling Carlton Crew, and tries to increase his ever-expanding grip over the Melbourne crime world; whilst Jason Moran is in jail, his brother Mark takes control of the family business.
Lewis Moran hires Benji Veniaman to execute his son's, Mark Moran's killer. Subsequently, Veniamen is insulted by the Carton Crew and forms a dangerous alliance with their unpredictable rival Carl Williams.
With their men in jail or dead, the women who love gangsters try to get on with their lives; a rival criminal named "PK" tries to undermine Carl Williams and his empire.
Amid growing public unrest, the Police establish Task Force Purana to combat the gangland war; loan shark Mario Condello faces his own financial crisis, which he solves with brutal efficiency.
Jason Moran returns from self-imposed exile, determined to destroy his rival Carl Williams; death stalks a children's football match; Taskforce Purana finally gets the resources it needs to defeat the criminals.
Carl Williams is now the undisputed king of the underworld, confident he can get away with murder; the police make the first major breakthrough in their investigations, but they may be too late to prevent another death.
Carl uses his high media profile to accuse Detective Steve Owen of corruption; Graham "Munster" Kinniburgh is gunned down and Mick Gatto tries to convince Carl Williams to end the gangland war.
Lewis Caine vows to avenge his best mate Benji's death, but can't trust his new colleagues; lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson's plans for a romantic future are shattered when her lover is killed.
A rival plots the downfall of Mario Condello, the last remaining member of the Carlton Crew; however Mario plans a hit of his own, unaware his hitman is informing on him; Taskforce Purana is rocked when their boss becomes the latest victim.
