Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout, but could benefit from more slot time. He's a reliable target for intermediate and short routes.
The bottom of the list includes more possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than those in deep areas, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great sleeper pick this year, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's skills since some receivers are better in the slot and can't play more deep.
For example, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in targets per game (4.8) but is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to make a first down on an open, deep route.
On the other hand, some receivers excel inside, but struggle on the perimeter. For example the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he ran 74% of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. That's a huge improvement and illustrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays in the middle of the field most of his passing downs. He is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.
Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.
On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to create pressures during the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime packages and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been an enormous asset when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. As a group, wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who play on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
That's why it's interesting to see a player like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this list. This is a great way to create matchup advantages for your team and helps to explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he plays the X position, and makes some big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players on this list but he's a high-graded wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman, a player who is able to put huge numbers on targets of all kinds is another example. He has a high slot receiver grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also a great player for contested-catch.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important player in the defensive team. On the other hand, he's had trouble to stop passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size, and route-running abilities.
