I had been on the lookout for more bush weed for months, exploring faraway taped worlds just about ready to give up when I found a tape marked "BWCT#2" hiding inside a "Grateful dead bootleg" case, along with notes scratched on a takeaway pie'n'mash receipt:

Thing is, I know TIME, fast-forward, rewind, double-speed, even whilst rude-walk…ing on the beach, feeling irie in the bushes, still too fast for Babylon bagowires... I find the future again looking in the past, I pick up a shiny tape, its jewel polystyrene of obviously superior quality, really heavy in my palm. Plastic so good it feels like exotic wood without trying. Jack's words are marked in blue ink on a light blue card:
"This electric sheep courtesy of Professor K at C-side records in Manhattan. When he hears I'm looking for anything electro I don't already know, the in-shop dj gives me a nod and puts on record after record of machin…e funk, I'm floored. I must have been in a hole these past ten years, missed a whole scene of electro. Turns out it all crossed over from another dimension called Japan. I exchange a wad of cash for a dozen of 7s and 12s that I carry home and spin like mad until I don't know what year it is anymore.
Techno-pop then, when sexy robots served Brandy pop on shiny chrome trays. These cassettes have a way to creep up on you, one shell looking very much like another, and I sometimes think that the supply of good tapes will end as abruptly as it started. I have had my eyes on a clear shell for a while, a rather unpromising-looking number, so I skip the handwritten notes and hit the play button thinking this is gonna be the first bad one for sure. Wrong, you ask? not only, but with a mind expanding faster than the universe, hungry!
"My friend Pete has b…een saying for weeks that he doesn't "get" Jazz. So I sit him down on the old leather armchair in the round corner by the stereo, force-feed some magic into him. He is grinning through the first bars of Mingus "Hobo ho", but when the horns start hitting the riff again and again, his legs get the shake. I pull him deeper with some Coleman, the shake goes up to his chin now, this is just the beginning though. By the time electric miles ploughs into his virgin brain, he's off the chair tearing down the walls and the stereo is on fire; eventually he collapses in his own juices, free, police on my doorstep, there goes the neighbourhood. Time to move again, the road never ends."

First day of summer, already nuclear-hot, and here I am, opening the Mystery box once again, to get another magic tape. I let my fingers do the choosing, like the divining rod of a dowser seeking an underground spring. They settle on a besmirched cartridge that looks like it has seen some tough love, and slipped through noisy hands.
The cassette has a thin layer of what I initially thought was BBQ sauce, then I read the notes:
"Bay medic ambulance tape#1. this gravy one I got from a friend, C-Low, homie picked up on Farrington Way, drive-by shooting, dude so high on The Gin can't even feel the holes in his Tupac T-shirt, laughs mouthfuls of blood hearing my electro tape rolling in the bus, calls it World war 2 beats.By the time we hit base, says he's gonna educate me, hands me a tape and a twamp from his pocket, can't keep it in E.R., I tell him I'll give back the sound later, I play it all around town, nasty day, blown mind on Sage St, DFO on East bayshore rd, , Disco biscuit O.D. in North fair oaks, even a crash out there in the cuts. End of the day, check out on C-Low to return the tape, turns out he didn't make it. Christmas cancelled. Gourmet match: fried chicken, Course light, Henessy. Palo Alto, July 26th 1995"
This is the tape you play to death. I pick a luxuriant green cassette labelled "BUSH WEED CORN TRAS…H", wondering what kind of high it has stored for me in its magnetic tape.
The folded card bears washed out sub-scribbles, that I spend Side A deciphering.
