The Viennese secession was formed in 1897 by an Austrian group of artists who decided to go against the Association of Austrian Artists to create their own group. As the name secession indicates, this movement represented protest against traditional art towards the future. The first chairman of the group was Gustav Klimt. The Viennese Secession united naturalists, modernists, impressionists and more forming a work of art. The Viennese Secession drew inspiration from William Morris and the Art and crafts movement to reunite fine and applied arts

Figure one is the “Beethoven Frieze” by Gustav Klimt created in 1902. This was painted for the Viennese Secession’s 14th exhibition, this painting was dedicated to the composer who was a Vienna resident. The painting was 112 feet long and weighed 4 tons. The significance of this painting is that it forms part of what the Secessionists aimed to creating. To the secessionists, they didn’t just want to paint a pretty picture, but wanted to include all forms of art, performing arts, the theater and the opera. The secessionists who created visuals for the composer’s work would play them at the openings to incorporate the them to the shimmering effects. Despite the modern aspects we see in this movement and this artwork, the secessionists relied on old tropes, figures from Greek mythology and the flattened depictions seen on Greek vases demonstrates the range of influences of their work.

Figure two is a painting, “Tuareg” by Evgenia Silvina. If we look at the painting, we see a woman gazing at us while dressed in a geometrical pattern with the same shapes incorporated in a head piece. This painting is influenced by the Viennese Secession, but specifically by the art style of the famous Gustav Klimt. Looking at the color work in the image we see a set color scheme with the most eye-catching color to be the shades of gold in the background and in the bodywork. The shade in the background is much more subtle than in the body work, making the bodywork stand out more. This is similar to the style of art Gustav used, for his work always had gold incorporated somewhere in the painting. Another characteristic which is promenade here is the lack of definition in the body. Just like Gustav Klimt’s The kiss the body work is a two dimensional pattern places where the body is, making it look like flat material draped over the girl.
