Indeed. Their images have accompanied me lo’ this past half century. I first saw this movie in 1967, read the sub-titles, and the imprint became permanent: France and Love. Why do we waste our time on other things? The man is Jean-Louis Trintignant, who plays the role of a race car driver, Jean-Louis Duroc. Trintignant has played the key role in a couple of other movies that remain memorable for me: in the movie “Z” he commenced as a “good team player” but, when played for a fool, decide to become a rare commodity, an honest judge, who would charge: “You are indicted for perjury.” And in Krzysztof Kieslowski “Three Colors – Red” he would play the role of another judge, now in retirement, who had seen “a thing or two.” Ah, Anouk AimĂ©e, a cinema graphic “first love” of sorts, would play the role of Anne Gauthier. Both have children, the same age, respectively, Antoine and Francoise. They are in the same boarding school in Deauville, on the coast of Normandy, which is how their parents met. Both the parents are widowed, at that relatively young age, and the movie provides the details how that occurred. France during “les trente ans glorious,” the 30 glorious years of economic development following WW II. So much I did not realize when I viewed the movie the first time around, in Atlanta. For example, I had never heard of Marcel Proust, and certainly did not realize that Deauville, and that beach, would play prominently in “In Search of Lost Time,” in which Deauville would be called Balbec. Or that it would be in the Camargue, a French symbol for the “wild west,” that Gauthier and her husband would be riding the white horses, chasing the bulls. Or that it was Carcassonne that played a “cameo role” in another scene. It would be only four years after first seeing this movie that I would stay in a hotel, directly on Boulevard St. Germaine, in the heart of the Left Bank, and pay $10 a night (nowadays, that seems impossible, but yes, it was “les trente ans glorious.”) How could any porn star compete with Anouk AimĂ©e? Oh, she is SO subtle. The very quiet sensuality of her lips. The flick of the hair, the sidelong glance. A sense of bearing that says you must wait, at least an hour. And it is over halfway through the movie that she says to Duroc: “You never speak of your wife.” En fin, he explains, and it is all about Le Mans, and the 24 hours. A more formal time, “les trente ans glorious.” I was oblivious, the first time around, ’67. AimĂ©e is so impressed with Trintignant at Monte Carlo that she decides to send a telegram of congratulations. She concludes, not by saying, “Je t’aime” mais, “Je vous aime.” The more formal form of “you.” Sorta like some American Midwestern wives, in a former time, calling their husbands: “Mr.” After the race, and the telegraph, he decides to drive the length of France, from Monte Carlo, ultimately to Deauville. In one scene, he is using his electric razor as he drives, not realizing that she might appreciate a little stubble. “Les plus belles annĂ©es.” It will be released in 2019. Somewhat incredibly, they are all still alive, and “active” in the affairs of life. The Director, Claude Lelouch is 81, Trintignant is 88, and AimĂ©e is 86. I’ll certainly be an early viewer of the new release, and the title seems to convey the message, about now, and not then. The memories are there, and new ones need to be created. For this memorable, seminal work of my life, despite a few inconsequential flaws, 6-stars. The beat grows stronger.

This is the version I wanted to see, but it is mislabeled as the 1986 remake.

Just watched this on Prime. As of 3/21/2021, the video is the original 1966 version at 1h43m, as I'd hoped. The title is also correct for the original version. However, the description incorrectly states 1986 and describes LeLouch's 1986 sequel "A Man & A Woman: 20 Years Later (Un Homme et Une Femme, 20 ans déjà." This is in fact NOT the sequel its description claims (as of 3/21/2021), in which the director brought the original cast back together twenty years later. If you are not a cinephile willing to see this for the groundbreaking film it was in 1966, and you are full of the Hollywood story-only ethos, you may find this frustratingly slow and meandering. OTOH if you're able and willing to put yourself in LeLouch's head ca 1966 and see what he was trying to do and where he was coming from, you may enjoy it a great deal, as I did. It's an important piece of film history, and pioneered some then-innovative techniques.

I love this movie. I first saw it when it came out in 1966, loved it then, and so I'm very happy now to have it. Regarding the problem with double subtitles reported by some reviewers: evidently, this is not a consistent problem because my copy of the DVD does not have any problems at all. The only explanation I can offer is that there are two versions of the DVD, one with and one without the problem, and I happen to have the one that is fine. I looked at the identifying information given here on Amazon for the movie and on the back of my DVD box for the movie, and the only difference perhaps is that the Warner Brothers copyright year for mine is 2003, and the year of release given here in Amazon is 2004. Also, I bought mine through Amazon's used copies for this movie, but, theoretically, that should not matter. In addition, the ASIN numbers given in Amazon and on my disc's box are exactly the same.

If you are reading this, you are most likely already familiar with this movie and are looking to buy it for your collection. Rest assured that though the description page shows release of 1986, this IS actually the 1966 movie. It is in widescreen format, NOT cropped to 4:3 aspect. As many of the comments in reviews indicate, there are incorrectly timed subtitles overlaid during the movie (starting with their initial ride back to Paris from the kids' school). However, since the correct subs are hardcoded onto the film, the incorrect ones can be turned off in the settings during playback. I only wish Amazon would offer a higher definition version of this old favorite, but it isn't too bad in the current state. Also, the price is pretty cheap considering the actual discs are at least $40 if you can find one!

We had seen A Man and a Woman in the 1960s and it was a meaningful movie for my future husband and me back then. We always loved the theme song. I tried to find it to rent (streaming or DVD) recently so we could watch it again and it was no where to be found. So I bought this copy for our collection and it was delightful to watch the movie again after 50+ years. The movie arrived in perfect condition, it was exactly as described with English dubbing, and the movie played flawlessly. The plot is somewhat thin by today's standards but the movie had personal significance for us and still had meaning.

As I sat watching this movie on a Saturday in mid-May, I realized that it had been 33 years, almost to the day, since I sat in a theatre and watched the newly released film. I know nothing about art forms or cinematography, but I do know about love and how much it can hurt / heal. Back then I was pining over the loss of a love named Paul. Two weeks ago I was feeling the loss of a love named Paul. This movie will not appeal to you if you've never loved someone so much it hurt and then had to say good-bye to that person. This movie will mean nothing to you (except for the wonderful music, perhaps) if you've never met that one person around whom all that you were / are / or ever hope to be revolves. Leave the notebook closed on the table. Put the Photography 101 homework away. Watch this movie with your heart. If you can do that, you'll love it. By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed the 20-minute short on the making of the movie which appears as an extra on the DVD.

The ten-year marriage of Mark and Joanna Wallace is on the rocks. In flashback they recall their first meeting, memorable moments in their courtship and early wedded life, their travels through Europe, their broken vow never to have children, and their increasing tensions that led to both of them having extra-marital affairs.
An Oscar nominee for Best Score (Henry Mancini), SUNFLOWER is a grandly emotional melodrama featuring a stunning performance from Sophia Loren. In another of the actress's great collaborations with director Vittorio De Sica (THE BICYCLE THIEF), Loren plays Giovanna, a steel-willed Italian woman on a desperate search to find her husband Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni), who has gone missing on the WWII battlefields of Russia. Making the grueling overland journey years after the end of the war, she tracks Antonio down and finds him a changed man. This heart-wrenching reunion will forever alter the course of their lives.
Jacques Demy followed up The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with another musical about missed connections and second chances, this one a more effervescent confection.
Considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Rules of the Game, by Jean Renoir, is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a marquis' country chĂąteau lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances.

Sometimes Claude Lelouch makes good films or masterpieces, sometimes not at all. This sequel of "Un homme et une femme" is useless. It's not a bad movie in itself, because it's well acted, well made and very refined -high quality is a trademark in Lelouch movies. That's why I give 4 stars out of 10... But it's a useless project. Was it necessary to go back to the story and spoil the original picture? The 1966 film is very simple -it's a masterpiece because of that. There are only Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée, the chemistry is incredible. The film is really poetic, we don't want to know how their love story goes on. In the 1986 sequel we find them 20 years later -Lelouch tells us what they have become and how they meet again. There are other characters and facts w
