R.I.P : the British actress of film, television & stage Honor Blackman (1925-2020).
Perhaps most remembered for her seductive role as Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger, with a distinctive rich voice accompanying her blonde beauty, she was also adept at drama and comedy.
I invited her to sit for her portrait in 1993, when she was 68, after she had seen the portrait I had painted of fellow actress Barbara Windsor the previous year.
It was quite a whirlwind of a sitting at her Wandsworth (London) home - fitting me in-between appointments - but with her patience, resulting in a portrait capturing an underlying peace and dignity.

007 Barbie... Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman)

From the silver screen to my sketch pad (High School Art Class 1968) …damn, that was a long time ago.
Just dug up this old free hand sketch of Sean Connery that I created during portraiture studies in my old art class at high school. I didn’t find the original poster that I used for this likeness but I did find this photo of Sean for comparison. Maybe I should have furthered developing my semi-artistic talents? Oh well… ‘should of, could of, would of, BUT I didn’t’.
Art Class was always great because of all the “girls” in class. 😊 I chose to sketch Sean because he was debonair and of course I was suave. Hey, I did get an ‘A’ that day in the art class. .

A terrible year of snow blizzards, the 'Beast from the East', unwelcome hurricanes and rain enough to have Noah scurrying off to build his ark! Finally mid way through April we have our first blisteringly hot day and Jerry, my thirteen year old little bundle of mischief, was out celebrating as only cats know how.... that'll be sunbathing and sleeping then!

Luxury is an odd thing. It's equally about what we can have and what we cannot.
The legendary gourmand James Beard claimed that a simple baked potato was true gourmet food. And indeed, an organic yellow potato baked with its skin on sprinkled with coarsely ground sea salt will truly open anyone's imagination.
Personally, my favorite two snacks are cottage cheese and ketchup and avocado sprinkled with sugar (try these separately, you just might never look back).
True luxury still requires its semantic relations.
I called this design a "composition" hut rather than a writer's hut simply to marry the idea of a writer's abode and a musical composer's abode. The idea of going someplace to create requires a kind of 'compression' that is difficult to both identify and to enact. What should a street photographer's hut look like? And how about a golfer's hut?
It is no coincidence that the word hut and heart are similar. Both may be semantically related here.
Mahler's Komponierten haus had a peculiar entry: the low door opened out inside to a much larger interior space, perhaps in the style of Japanese teahouses. A golfer stepping into a tee box faces a similar quasi-compression.
The legendary James Bond film "Goldfinger", has a scene onboard a private jet. This production was designed by Sir Ken Adams. Nevertheless it is a perfect ingredient to infuse fantasy with design for a homage to Ian Fleming.
Why isn't a Bond interior more simple? Perhaps because this is part of the Bond vocabulary.
In the film and in the hut, both parties are secretly observing each other. It's a perfect symbiosis.
The bathroom represents the womb or the kitchen or a fire element.
Pussy Galore tries to control Bond with a Smith & Wesson. Bond coolly replies that if she were to use that on him, the bullet would go through the fuselage and everyone would die. The gun represents a neutralized fiire element. Contrast this with the intimate, warm and vibrant shave Bond has in the bathroom as he observes the scene. This slow act is oddly a metaphor for composition.
I like to think of my drawings as an Ozu notebook for one of his films. The scene on the spread pages is visually and textually set slowly piece by piece by two men over many bottles of Sake. Indeed, Tateshina is the perfect shrine for the genre of the composition hut.

James Bond inspired mas costume.Octopussy. At the Toronto Revellers Mas costume launch. 1,000 people in costumes like this took part in the Revellers' section at the 2013 Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival (Caribana) parade, August (but this launch was held in May). Octopussy (from the007 movie of the same name - 1983) was followed on stage by a Pussy Galore inspired costume from the movie Goldfinger.

The puzzle stash under the bed is getting smaller and smaller, which is why we're having to start on some of the ones we bought in weak moments, like this one: probably purchased on a day when our choices were limited and we ended up choosing anything rather than go home empty-handed.
Anyway, we're cat lovers so it was no hardship to attempt a jigsaw full of them, and in fact after a wobbly start - all those ginger moggies looked like they'd be murder to sort one from another - we ended up hurtling towards the finish line in short order!

One of four Aston Martin DB5s used in the 1963 Goldfinger movie is part of the collection of the Louwman Museum in The Hague, Netherlands. There were four cars used in this movie and one of them sold for €3,300,000 last summer in London. One can't be accounted for, but someone just informed me that that one was stolen from a storage in 2005. Not this car, this one is part of this collection for 20 years now.
This photo was added to CMG almost two years ago. But I took the liberty to remove it and re-add it, because of the new 007 Skyfall movie, that marks 50 years of James Bond on the silver screen.
