According to Ukrainian demographer Ella Libanova, Ukraine has lost about 10 million people - those who died and those who left the country. Another approximately 6 million people (mainly women and children) have left the country since 2022 and registered as refugees abroad.

"This is a catastrophe. No country can exist without people. Even before the war, Ukraine's population density was low and very unevenly distributed," says Libanova.

The birth rate has dropped below one child per woman. For comparison: in Europe, this figure is 1.4.
