Ukraine goes underground to survive under drone fire
The Ukrainian Association of Developers presented a fortification project directly inspired by the lessons learned on the front line. The concept departs from the classic bunker, visible from the air, and instead chooses underground positions — dispersed and camouflaged — interconnected to maintain combat capability even under constant bombardment.
The project prioritizes survivability against artillery, drones, and aerial surveillance. It includes kilometers of tunnels, protected shelters, and internal paths that allow personnel, ammunition, and evacuation to be moved without being exposed to sensors or direct attacks. This project, developed by civil engineers and architects commissioned by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, combines traditional defensive structures with the requirements of modern warfare.
The strategic lesson is clear: the trench has not disappeared; it has simply been filled in, fragmented, and adapted to the drone's view. On the battlefield, where everything visible can be detected and attacked in a matter of minutes, defense again depends on camouflage, depth, and redundancy.
