As our time here winds down, Laura and I are reflecting our time here on the island. First a top 10;. Top 10 things nice about Ubud. Friendly People. Inexpensive Spas. Inexpensive Food. Inexpensive Accommodations. Most attractions within walking distance. Almost everyone speaks english. Great night life for live music and entertainment. Green every where! Lots of Temples and Culture. You can just sit quietly and life will come to you! Top 10 things not so nice about Ubud. Scooters and traffic everywhere! Not so quiet downtown Ubud, see Food quality is hit and miss. Alcohol is super-expensive compared to surrounding countries. Ants, lots of ants. The stink of diesel. No beach, need a pool. Lots of garbage. No sidewalks, so you have to compete with There are more Warungs home cooking type restaurants along Jalan and more retail shops along Monkey Forest Road, but you can pretty much find the same crap tourist kitch along either route if you look hard enough. The side roads are charming to explore, and you can't really get lost, as rivers cut your path off and routes typically join up to a main road eventually. You will likely get a better bargaining opportunity off the main streets as well. There were multiple places to find groceries, but the two that were larger superstores was the Bintang Market and the Delta Dewar market. Bintang was on the western side of Jalan road and the Delta was on the eastern side, ensuring that wherever you accomodations were, you were within walking distance. There were smaller convenience stores circle K, etc. Laura loved them. You can pick them up at most convenience stores and provided quick energy and cheap calories if needed. The Indonesian style snacks are also way less expensive than western name-brand chips or cookies. Our first week here was spent walking everywhere, and I mean everywhere! We put on average 8 KM per day walking. Once the initial shock of not seeing snow stopped and we hit all the attractions within walking distance, we still made it a point of hitting our 15, step limit, but not with the same verve and vigor that we started with. That first week we went through 20 bottles of water between the two of us and no peeing ok, we pee'd a little, the kidneys work fine Mom! Travel Hack - bring your own refillable water bottle, or try to re-use as much as possible the bottles you do have to buy. Our villa had a filtered water dispenser as most will , however boiling tap water will also work. There are also plenty of green coconut vendors everywhere too, if you enjoy coconut water, in the ultimate biodegradable container! Our favourite walk was the Campuhan ridge walk. Comprising of a 5km stretch we stopped off at a nice cafe and enjoying our coffees, Jamu and breakfast. The path had local artisans and a slew of accommodations for that getaway feeling. Travel Hack - Cook your own breakfast, we found that breakfast was very expensive compared to lunch and dinners.. Travel Hack - Get your favorite coffee roaster on the island to micro-grind the coffee, and you can make your own Balinese coffee with just a kettle and save 30k IDR per cup. One thing to remember anywhere you travel: always pause to look up, and look around. We noticed that due to the heat, and the lack of stable footing along roads and whatever sidewalks we could find, we were slouching over as we walked, focused on looking at our feet. When we looked up, we saw clouds of dragon flies dancing above us, amazing butterflies the size of birds, birds of all sizes, a few bats, giant spiders, and every now and then, the volcano would appear out of the clouds. Never forget that 'up' is a direction! If we were to sum Ubud, Bali up we would say it was a great place to stay, yet our issue was 3 weeks was too long. Ubud is, at most days. Laura and I started to get a bit anxious as we were trying to find things to do. I think if Laura and I took more time documenting the temples, or shopping, it may have been a bit better, but in the end we were getting a bit bored. Our stay in Kuta was a shock after the relative quiet of Ubud, talk about a busy town! You definitely need patience here or you will end up smoking someone in the head. Laura and I walked the beach and couldn't believe the garbage and plastic in the surf; any thought to go swimming in the ocean here was 'washed' away pun intended. Also, this is a town where you need to check your bill, and INSIST on getting your change - two out of the three times we ate out in larger restaurants we had to practice our consumer rights, all while not getting too mad One thing we have to say about Kuta was the constant chatter of the vendors wanting us to enter their stalls. You can tell it was not busy here because vendors out numbered the tourists about Our accommodations in Kuta were excellent I am happy to say! The pool was an oasis away from the street noise and constant chatter of the street vendors. Can't hear any scooters here! The architecture was typical Balinese but the sculpture was, shall we say, unique. We couldn't tell if it was just the Balinese sense of humour coming through in the horse anatomy, or if the sculptor just had never seen an actual horse One final note as we were leaving Bali, we were dinged a ,IDR penalty for being in the country too long I was calm believe it or not, but if looks could kill, Laura's would have wiped out a few immigration officers for sure. I just hope it goes to waste treatment infrastructure, and does some good for this island! A Trekking we will go, a trekking we will go, hi ho the dairy-o a trekking we will go!
