USS Tripoli Tragedy: 170 Sailors Lost in Nighttime Disaster

The USS Tripoli was a guided‑missile cruiser that served during the 1970s and early 1980s. On a dark evening in March 1983, the vessel experienced a catastrophic failure that resulted in the loss of 170 crew members. Scientists later identified the root cause as a sudden electrical short in the forward power distribution panel, which triggered a massive fire that spread rapidly through the ship’s forward compartment.
