US Southeast rebar market silent as mills wait on scrap to resolve

The US Southeast rebar market has remained strikingly silent following the Fourth of July holiday as mills remain to await scrap costs to settle, market sources stated Wednesday.

" It's always quiet after a vacation, yet it has been astonishingly silent in last 2 days," stated a Southeast distributor. "I think a great deal of individuals are actually simply trying to get some bearing on where the market is."

Domestic rebar costs have continued to hold stable in the Southeast today as mills aim to see where scrap clears up throughout the July acquire week, a producer in the region said. In very early trading Wednesday, one Southeast mill was buying shredded down $20/lt, prime grades at sidewards to down $10/lt as well as reduced qualities down $10-$ 15/lt. However, trading activity was slow-moving to develop in the area, with the biggest EAF group yet to provide strong offers to distributors.

" polyethers do not think there's a great deal of higher energy for rebar if scrap slides, but for now the mills are hanging to present [rebar] rates in hopes they will certainly remain," the fabricator claimed.

Platts on Wednesday maintained its daily United States Southeast rebar evaluation at $535-$ 550/st ex-works.

Mills seem extra ready to cut much more aggressive deals in order to protect huge bookings, the fabricator stated, but noted that non-residential building and construction need for rebar in the region continues to be less than robust.

" There is work, yet I do not see any type of genuine adjustment in demand coming as far as more construction starting," he stated.

The US imported rebar market stays cloudy, the supplier claimed. Buying out of Turkey has continued to be light in recent weeks as well as no brand-new purchases were reported out of Turkey Wednesday as the marketplace continued to be silent for the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

" You hear import prices will be up when Turkey's back in the marketplace and afterwards in the following sentence you hear they will be down," he said. "Right now it looks like a great deal of supposition."

Platts on Wednesday preserved its United States imported rebar analysis at $377-$386/st CIF Houston.
