UNCLOS 82

UNCLOS 1982 is a United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea that regulates territorial waters, continental shelves, and exclusive economic zones. It was adopted in 1982 by the United Nations General Assembly and entered into force in 1992. It is one of the most important international agreements in the field of international law, together with the 1972 United Nations Convention relating to the Law of Treaties.
Background
UNCLOS or United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a treaty of the United Nations that was adopted by the General Assembly in 1982. It is the successor to the UNCLOS of 1977, and contains revisions to the 1976 version. It was ratified by over 100 countries, but not by Iran, Syria and North Korea.
The treaty was amended in 2004, and again in 2018.
History of UNCLOS

UNCLOS 82, commonly known as the South China Sea, is a report by the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (UNCLOS) on July 25, 1982. This was the first comprehensive study of the sea by a UN body.
The report defined the limits of the continental shelf, which is the area of seabed extending beyond the boundaries of a nation's continental shelf.
