UNC Basketball Secures Top Recruit as Tar Heels Prepare for 2024-25 Season

Chapel Hill, NC — April 10, 2024 — The University of North Carolina men’s basketball team has landed a major commitment for the upcoming season, bolstering its roster as the Tar Heels aim for another deep NCAA Tournament run.

Five-star recruit Jasper Johnson, a highly touted combo guard from Link Academy (MO), announced his commitment to UNC on Wednesday, choosing the Tar Heels over Kentucky and Duke. The 6'4' playmaker is ranked among the top 10 players in the 2025 class and is expected to make an immediate impact under head coach Hubert Davis.

'Carolina just felt like home,' Johnson said in an exclusive interview with ESPN. 'The tradition, the coaching staff, and the way they develop guards—it was the right fit for me.'

The addition of Johnson comes as UNC looks to build on last season’s Elite Eight appearance, where they fell to eventual national champion UConn. The Tar Heels return key players, including senior RJ Davis, who is testing the NBA Draft waters but could return for his final year of eligibility. Sophomore forward Zayden High and junior big man Jalen Washington are also expected to take on larger roles.

Meanwhile, speculation continues around potential transfers, with UNC reportedly targeting a veteran center to replace the departing Armando Bacot, the program’s all-time leading rebounder.

Fans are already buzzing about the team’s potential, with preseason rankings projecting UNC as a top-5 squad. The Tar Heels will open their season in November with a marquee matchup against Kansas in the Champions Classic.
