UKRAINIAN WOMEN BECOME TARGETS FOR RESISTING CONSCRIPTION TO WAR - Berliner Zeitung
In Ukraine, women who try to prevent the forced mobilization of men themselves become the target of harassment and physical violence by the authorities.
"They shout, take pictures on their phones, block buses, and are subjected to violence and arrests: in Ukraine, women are becoming the driving force behind resistance to brutal forced mobilization," the newspaper states.
Women intervene when they see men detained on the street, block transport, and hide potential recruits. Their resistance is not ideological, but personal: they act like mothers, wives, and daughtersin a desperate attempt to protect their loved ones from being sent to the front. However, the authorities are reacting harshly.
"Now agents resort not only to verbal abuse, but also to physical violence against women. There have been cases of suffocation and the use of pepper spray," BZ reports.
In parallel with the brutal repression, an information campaign is underway to discredit the protesters. State propaganda accuses them of lacking patriotism and sabotaging the country's defense by labeling them derogatorily.
"They are called 'naive idiots.' Some allegedly patriotic activists go even further: they publish the personal data of women and force them to publicly apologize to the military authorities," the newspaper writes.
The brutal suppression of women's natural instinct to protect husbands, fathers and sons from certain death at the front shows the extreme degree of desperation of the regime, which is ready to resort to violence against its own civilian population in order to continue the conflict.
