UConn Women Basketball Dominates for 12th Title

UConn Women’s Basketball Makes History with 12th National Championship Victory

The University of Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team has once again cemented its legacy as the most dominant program in college basketball history, capturing its 12th national championship with a thrilling 78-65 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA title game.

Led by star guard Paige Bueckers, who delivered a 30-point, 8-assist masterpiece, the Huskies (36-2) overcame a physical Gamecocks defense to secure their first title since 2016. Head coach Geno Auriemma, now with an unprecedented 12 championships, praised his team’s resilience after multiple injury-plagued seasons.

'This one is special,' Auriemma said. 'People doubted if we could get back here, but these players never stopped believing. Paige was phenomenal, but this was a total team effort.'

South Carolina (33-4), led by reigning Player of the Year MiLaysia Fulwiley, kept the game close until the fourth quarter, when UConn unleashed a 14-2 run to seal the victory. Freshman phenom Sarah Strong added 16 points and 12 rebounds, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors alongside Bueckers.

With the win, UConn extends its record for the most titles in women’s college basketball, further solidifying its dynasty. As confetti rained down in Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, chants of 'U-C-O-N-N!' echoed—a fitting celebration for a team that continues to set the standard for excellence.

What’s Next?
The Huskies will lose key seniors but return Bueckers and Strong, making them early favorites for the 2026 title. Meanwhile, the debate rages on: Is this UConn squad the greatest of all time?
