UCF Knights Pull Off Stunning Upset Over No. 5 Houston in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Orlando, FL — March 2, 2025 — In what is being called one of the greatest games in program history, the UCF Knights men's basketball team delivered a jaw-dropping performance, defeating the fifth-ranked Houston Cougars 89-87 in overtime at Addition Financial Arena.

The Knights (20-8, 11-6 Big 12) fought tooth and nail against the powerhouse Cougars (24-5, 14-3), with star guard Jaylin Sellers dropping a career-high 32 points, including a clutch three-pointer with 12 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory. The sold-out crowd of over 10,000 fans erupted as UCF secured its first-ever win over a top-five opponent since joining the Big 12.

'This is what we've been building toward,' said UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins. 'Our guys showed incredible heart tonight. They never backed down, and this win proves we belong among the best in the country.'

The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Houston’s All-American candidate L.J. Cryer scoring 28 points to keep the Cougars in contention. However, UCF’s defense held firm in the final moments, forcing a critical turnover in the last seconds of regulation to send the game to OT.

With this victory, UCF strengthens its case for an NCAA Tournament bid, a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2019. Analysts now project the Knights as a potential 8-seed, with a chance to climb even higher if they finish the season strong.

'The energy was unreal,' said Sellers. 'We knew we could do this. Now it’s time to keep proving everyone wrong.'

UCF’s next challenge comes this Saturday against No. 12 Iowa State, another opportunity to make a statement in the loaded Big 12 conference.
