UC Irvine Basketball's Rise to Glory

Title: The Rise of the Anteaters

In the fall of 2023, the UC Irvine Men’s Basketball team was at a crossroads. After a strong run in the Big West Conference, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances under former coach Russell Turner, the Anteaters had hit a rough patch. A mix of injuries, transfers, and tough losses left them with a disappointing season. But little did anyone know, a new era was about to begin.

A New Leader

When Coach Turner left for a high-major job, UCI Athletic Director Mike Izzi made a bold move—hiring Coach Marcus Reynolds, a fiery young assistant from Gonzaga known for his player development and high-energy style. Reynolds brought a new philosophy: 'Speed, Defense, and Grit.'

His first task? Convincing Jason 'J-Will' Williams, a lightning-fast point guard from Compton, to stay after he had entered the transfer portal. Reynolds drove to L.A., sat with Williams and his family, and promised him one thing: 'If you stay, we’ll make history.'

J-Will stayed. And so did Elijah Thomas, a 6'10' shot-blocking machine who had NBA scouts buzzing. Together, they formed the core of a team hungry to prove itself.

The Turning Point

The season started rocky—a close loss to UCLA, a heartbreaker against San Diego State. But in December, something clicked. A shocking upset over #18 USC at the Bren Events Center sent shockwaves through college basketball. J-Will dropped 25 points, and Thomas had 7 blocks. Fans stormed the court. The Anteaters were back.

Big West Dominance

UCI rolled through conference play, led by:

J-Will (15.4 PPG, 6.2 APG)

Elijah Thomas (12.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 3.5 BPG)

Sophomore sniper Daniel Park (43% from three)

They clinched the Big West regular-season title, then stormed through the conference tournament, punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament as a 12-seed.

March Madness Magic

In the First Round, UCI faced 5-seed Oklahoma. Down 4 with 30 seconds left, J-Will hit a step-back three, then stole the inbound pass and laid it in for the win. 68-67. Anteaters advance.

The Second Round pitted them against 4-seed Virginia, a defensive powerhouse. In a grind-it-out battle, Elijah Thomas swatted the potential game-winner at the buzzer. 54-53. Sweet 16 bound.

The nation was stunned. A mid-major from Irvine was now one of the hottest stories in sports. Though their run ended against 1-seed Houston, the Anteaters had made their mark.

Legacy

The next season, UCI landed a top-25 recruiting class, including a 5-star big man from Orange County. The Bren Center sold out every game. ESPN dubbed them 'The Giant Killers of the West.'

And as for J-Will and Elijah? Both got drafted—proving that UC Irvine wasn’t just a stepping stone… it was a destination.
