Types of Fiction Notes

Sometimes genres may overlap and we may encounter fiction writing which may be a blend of two or more types of fiction.
Fairytales

These are normally short stories for children about elves, dragons, fairies, unicorns, mermaids, witches and usually magic and other enchantments. Fairytales are typically European and have happy endings.
Fables

These are stories that teach a moral. A moral is a lesson a fable teaches and usually comes at the end of the lesson. In most fables, one or more of the characters are talking animals.
Science Fiction

This type of fiction revolves around science and technology. It often involves storylines set in the future. These stories give the reader a glimpse of what it could be like someday.
Realistic Fiction

These may be based on facts but include made up characters or story elements. In these stories the characters may face real life problems and often find real solutions.
Historical Fiction

These feature made-up characters and plot but the setting is real. Historical facts may be included in the story but it is still considered fiction.
Mystery

These stories deal with puzzling events such as a murder. They also have a quest to solve a problem. Most times they have a character that plays the role of a detective. This character is usually a human.
Adventure

Stories with unusual and exciting experiences. They usually include travel to faraway locations, danger and exploration.
Horror

These are stories written to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle their readers or viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror.
Comedy

These stories usually include funny characters and storylines to make the viewers or readers laugh.
Folklore/Folktales

These are the songs, stories, myths and proverbs of a people or βfolkβ handed down by word of mouth.
Mythology

These are stories of a national or folk hero that has basis in fact but also includes imaginative material.
