If there are some comic book fans who don't like the MCU, they may find some entertainment in these adaptations instead.
Marvel Studios has dominated the big screen for over a decade and now they've moved to the small screen. The juggernaut of the MCU can't be stopped. But that doesn't stop others from trying to get into the game. 2021 saw quite a few independent comic book shows become successful with the likes of Sweet Tooth and Invincible .
So far, 2022 doesn't seem to have a lot of new independent comic book properties on the horizon, either on the big or small screen. New seasons of Invincible and The Boys are expected, but so far it seems like a light year for anyone looking to try something new. Still, though, there are plenty of options for you if the MCU isn't your thing.
The MCU has a lock on Spider-Man and his supporting cast but that doesn't stop Sony Pictures from branching out and creating their films. Morbius looks to be the first film set in some sort of shared cinematic universe with Venom. Following Michael Morbius as he looks to cure his fatal illness, he develops vampire-like abilities and becomes the titular anti-hero/villain.
The trailers for Morbius have confused many with connections to practically every Spider-Man film and Venom , but if someone is tired of the type of superhero film that Marvel Studios has been putting out then Sony's might be their thing. If Venom and its sequel are anything to go by, Morbius will be largely disconnected from any other franchise and offer a darker look into the mind of an unorthodox protagonist.
The sequel to the winner of the best-animated feature of 2019, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks to deliver the same type of originality that audiences responded to so well the first time around. Instead of the Spider-Verse coming to Miles Morales, Miles is coming to the Spider-Verse this time around. Outside of that, not much is known about the plot.
When it comes to DC Comics, Batman is the poster child. If Batman is in the movie, then it's likely that movie will do very well. There's been so much Batman that one could ask what more is there to do with the character? Matt Reeves' The Batman looks to answer that question. Offering a fresh take on the Caped Crusader and some of his most iconic villains, The Batman drops in March of 2022.
The MCU is light and fun but, sometimes, audiences want darker material to engage with. The benefit of having options is that many comic book fans can not enjoy a variety of offerings from different companies. The Batman looks to have a much harder edge than your average MCU film.
Ezra Miller first graced the big screen as Barry Allen back in 2016 with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice . This film has been in development for many years and has suffered many director shake-ups. But now The Flash is officially going to grace the big screen in November of 2022 with a loose adaptation of Flashpoint. Barry will team up with Supergirl, an alternate version of himself, and two Batmen, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton.
The character of The Flash has enjoyed an unbroken 8 season run on the CW but fans have been eager for a big-screen take on the character even before Zack Snyder made him a part of his Justice League. The Flash offers audiences a brand new character to experience on the big screen, unlike anything they've seen before. Getting to see Michael Keaton as Batman again is also a major draw.
2022 is the year of Batman, so if a person is tired of the MCU and not tired of Batman, it seems like they'll have a good year. Batman: Caped Crusader is coming from Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams , and Bruce Timm, the mastermind behind the DC Animated Universe of the '90s and early '00s.
For years, audiences have been eagerly anticipating a return to the DC animated shows of their childhood, and while this isn't exactly that, it's still a new Batman animated show that looks to be the same type of show but for a modern HBO Max audience. So far, Marvel's only animated fair is children’s shows and What If...? so a show like Batman: Caped Crusader could be a welcome change of pace for the older comic book fan.
It's a little hard to believe but Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam film is finally coming to theatres in 2022 after years of development hell . Back in 2014, Dwayne Johnson officially joined a Shazam film as the lead villain, but with Dwayne’s star power rising every year, he was yet to be given his film. Now the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is finally ready to change.
Marvel doesn't tend to do these anti-hero/villain-centered films. In fairness, they don't need to. But the success of things like Joker and Venom proves that audiences are interested in seeing a darker side to their comic book characters. Dwayne Johnson hasn't played a villain since Doom so it will be interesting to see if he's still got what it takes to truly be bad.
2022 is going to be a wild year for DC Comics. The highly anticipated sequel to one of WB's most profitable films, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sees James Wan once again team up with Jason Mamoa for another adventure with Aquaman. Not much is known about the plot at this point since it comes out at the end of the year, but the first Aquaman film was unlike anything we've seen before, so audiences can expect more of the same.
One common complaint the MCU receives is that it dampens a filmmaker’s unique voice to stay in line with the established tone set by the previous films. For the most part, DC's films have stayed away from that criticism. James Wann's passion and voice are on full display in the Aquaman films, so if a film fanatic is tired of the same type of movie, then DC has you covered.
The first year of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw their stories move to the small screen of Disney+. 2022 will see HBO Max become home to TV shows set in the world of the DCEU. The first of which will be a spin-off of the critically successful James Gunn film, The Suicide Squad . Following the titular character of Peacemaker, this show is also James Gunn's first attempt at a TV Show.
The Marvel shows have proven to be a wild success but so far the only major options for comic book TV shows are on Disney+ or the CW. More mature fare exists on Amazon, but Peacemaker will offer fans of comic book media a show similar to the ones Marvel puts out but with a harder edge than they may be craving.
The CW universe is expanding all the time. With five shows, the DC Universe is alive and flourishing on the CW. Naomi is a comic book character that many comic book fans may not be aware of right now, seeing as she's one of the newest characters in DC's library. Created by Brian Michael Bendis, the show is adapting the titular character, with Ava DuVerney in the producers’ seat.
Many comic fans like to draw a line in the sand and say they're either a Marvel fan or a DC fan. Some DC fans don't enjoy the type of shows or movies that Marvel Studios has to offer. Naomi offers DC fans a new character to invest in that some may never have heard of, offering something fresh in the world of comic book adaptations.
Devil Dinosaur is a Jack Kirby creation that's been around the Marvel universe for a very long time. A small fan-favorite character, he's finally coming to the small screen as a co-lead in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur . Based on the comic of the same name, it will see Lunella Lafayette team p with the red-skinned T-Rex to protect New York City.
Kids are an essential part that often gets overlooked when it comes to comic book adaptations. There have been plenty of animated comic book properties over the years, but Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur offer kids family-friendly fun away from the burdens of a growing cinematic or animated universe.

Hi, I'm Brent Moeshlin, founder and CEO of Quality Comix.
Today I am known as the owner of America's largest online vintage comic book store that buys 250,000 vintage comic books every year.
You see, like many, I grew up loving comic books.
