Two signals at once, plus a scheduling problem

Clinical settings combine two difficulties that most workplaces have only one of.

The brief pulls in two directions

A medical headshot has to read as competent and approachable simultaneously. Patients choose on both, often at a difficult moment and partly on instinct.

The conventions are consequently narrow: lighter background, more open posture, warmer overall. Overcorrecting into informality cancels the first half, and competence is the half a patient cannot verify any other way.

The scheduling is structurally impossible

Rotating shifts, part-time staff, multiple sites. There is no date on which everyone is available, so a session produces a portrait set with gaps — and the gaps are always the same people.

What actually produces the warmth

Light direction, not expression. Frontal, slightly soft light reads as open; hard side light reads as severe regardless of what the face is doing.
