I find the "conversation" between you two to be very enlightening. I also find it interesting to see who started to curse...

Being a native German speaker, I would feel quite insulted if I read something Today that addressed women as well as men and used the male address only. Languages change constantly and what would have been correct 50 years ago (male only including the female form as well) is not acceptable anymore in most cases. Every language changes all the time; sometimes we are aware of it, sometimes less so.

As for the "it was this way before and therefore it should not change"...I don't think anybody who says that can be serious about it. Our whole life consists of change...I bet you own a mobile phone and use it. 30 years ago, there was no such thing; there was not even a word for such a concept. So language had to change to incorporate these changes. Nobody uses "thee" and "thy" anymore in everyday conversation. Taking this into account, why should something else be left untouched and stay the way it always has been? Btw. "always" in this case goes only back to 1808 which was when the the form "ladies and gentlemen" was introduced. Before that the address was "gentlemen and ladies" (http://www.bartleby.com/81/9831.html).

A long time ago, Apartheid was still in force, I was in South Africa and got into a discussion with a farmer. He told me "I have no problems with the blacks here that a slap to the head could not solve". I am fairly sure he wouldn't dare say anything like this anymore but at heart he still believes it and nothing anybody says can change his opinion. I think at least a few men who defend their right to look at scantily clad women in games think this should be a womans place anyway but they'd never dare say it out loud (well, in some discussions they actually do. Isn't anonymity a great thing?) and just like with the farmer there is nothing one can say or do to change their minds. At least I have not seen any way up to now.
