The beach at Jacob Riis is a little more challenging to access than the Rockaways or Coney Island . There’s no direct subway, and a Google-mapping of public transport options will lead you through a series of at least three buses. But, despite the lack of mass transit, the people of the city still get there because: summer, heat, and, as tempting as they are, the East and Hudson Rivers are no-go's. Once you finally reach Jacob Riis, you will find that you have ended up on one of the quieter, chiller beaches in NYC. Jacob Riis, and its sister beach Fort Tilden, are where you go when you crave sands less traveled, when a hand-packed picnic is more appealing than boardwalk tacos, and when you’re ready to let it all hang out. Jacob Riis is, after all, NYC’s only de facto nude beach (pretty sure naked sunbathing would be shut down quick-like at Coney Island), as well as a legendary LGBTQ-friendly hang spot. So whether you’re an exhibitionist, or a supporter of #FreeTheNipple, or you just want to spend some time with your flyest friends, Jacob Riis is the place to be. While vacationing, some people take off from work. Others take off everything — in public! Around the world ( Corniglia, Italy ; Crete, Greece ; Rovinj, Croatia ) and across America too (San Francisco; Middletown, New Jersey; Miami), travelers are tossing aside bathing suits and swim trunks for a summer glow sans tan lines.
But just because it’s a no-clothes zone doesn’t mean manners are tossed aside as well.
“Polite rules of society do not change once you take your clothes off,” says Tom Mulhall, owner of The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in Palm Springs, California
“Each nudist resort has its own individual rules and regulations,” says Mulhall. “At nude beaches there are certain unwritten rules and guidelines people are expected to follow.”
Mulhall offers some advice for first-time (and seasoned) nudists/naturalists, so that with no shirts and no shoes there’ll also be no problems.

1.) Lounging by the pool: Always put a towel over any chair on which you lounge, sit, or lie. Other than that, sit or lie the exact same way you would if you were wearing a bathing suit — whatever makes you comfortable!
2) Chair Positioning: Pools are limited in size, so follow how the resorts have the chairs positioned. Depending how many people are on the grass or pool area, you might position chairs 10-20 feet apart. And just because people are naked doesn’t mean they don’t want their personal space (in fact, they might want it more). So if a couple is sitting by themselves, ask first before sitting close to them.
3) Picking up items on the beach: No need to adapt your movements to suit your nakedness. You’re already naked so there are no surprises. If you see something interesting on the sand, just bend down to pick it up the same way you would if you were wearing a bathing suit.
4) Looking at others’ bodies: This is a nudist resort so you don’t have to demurely cover your eyes every time a fellow naked beachgoer walks by. But you also don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. Just like at bathing suit beaches, where you might glance but never stare at others, the same is true at nudist beaches and resorts.

5) Photography at nudist resorts: Resorts have their own policies, from banning all photos to having official camera people.
6) Photography at nude beaches: You are out in the public; never, ever expect privacy. You never know who may be lurking out of sight with a telephoto lens.
7) Dining: Some resorts may have to follow local, city, or county rules about clothes and dining. Call first and ask management.
8) Parking lots & indoor spaces: Some places cater to membership and require 100% nudity at their pool. But as soon as people aren’t by the pool, they may or may not be dressed or wearing pool cover-ups. Again, it’s a good idea to check beforehand.
So go ahead and enjoy your (very) stripped-down vacation. Just remember to follow the rules, respect others, and act naturally when you’re au naturel.

Priscilla Fleming became a licensed massage therapist in 2019 to help people. What she didn’t expect was sexual harassment, which she says began almost instantly. “At that point I now had to process this traumatic experience while also navigating a brand new industry that put me alone in a dark room with strangers. So I really contemplated just leaving the industry all together between the vulgar messages and then trying to navigate that. I wasn't sure if it was worth it, but I stuck it out, “ says Fleming. In response, Fleming launched the ethics course, “Safety & Solicitation: Gaslighting and Power Dynamics” to help other therapists recognize threatening behavior from clients. She’s also on a mission to combat harmful stereotypes that plague the massage industry. The dangers facing massage therapists made headlines last month, when NFL quarterback Deshuan Watson was suspended by the Cleveland Browns for 11 games and given a $5 million fine after he was accused of sexual misconduct by 24 massage therapists. Allegations included Watson exposing himself and manipulating therapists into touching him in an inappropriate manner. Two of the women also accused Watson of pressuring them to perform oral sex. While Watson has repeatedly denied the claims, 23 of the 24 civil lawsuits have been settled. In an interview with Sports Radio 610, Watson’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, claimed that a ‘happy ending’ was not a crime unless extra money was paid for the service. “I feel as though he single handedly put a lot of us at risk to be assaulted,” says Fleming. “The NFL is a very large, well known industry and there is a very large fan base. So by his lawyer making these allegations, I'm afraid that this is going to empower that fan base to come and seek what Dashaun Watson was receiving.” With her ethics course, Fleming spends considerable time educating other therapists about gaslighting and grooming tactics used by predatory clients. Gaslighting involves manipulating someone by sowing self doubt in what they are experiencing, and grooming is a process of seeing how far a predator can push past a person's personal boundaries. Fleming notes that in the therapeutic relationship, the licensed therapist is granted the power to lead the dynamic in a professional setting. She says that when that power dynamic shifts, therapists may find themselves operating in threatening territory.

“The first thing is, yeah, the sand will get everywhere .”
Over the years, I’ve found myself falling into the role of "nude beach guide" – or clothes-free chaperone or starkas sherpa, if you will – to a range of friends. It makes sense. I do life drawing modelling and I’m "that housemate" who is often only wearing a towel. So what has getting naked in nature with friends taught me?
One of the first experiences was taking my then long-term girlfriend; my oldest female friend, Lauren; and her then boyfriend, who I’ll call Guy, to my favourite Sydney nude beach, Cobblers. It’s small, beautiful and protected, just around the spit from the much more famous Obelisk. Unlike the latter, it's usually full of older couples and families, giving it a really friendly atmosphere.
The girls were too nervous to strip at first, but insisted us guys disrobe “so that we fit in”. And so, just an hour after meeting one another, Guy and I stood completely naked next to one another applying sunscreen like good Australians.
Which is when I noticed a problem.
When you’re new to letting it all hang out in public, you can be extremely aware of avoiding touching your junk. A nude beach isn’t any sexier than a clothed one after you acclimatise, but newbies are often conscious of not seeming like a creep. I presume this is why I noticed Guy wasn’t applying sunscreen down under.
“Hey mate, you’ll want to slather the sausage.”
“It’s just, that skin doesn’t see much sun so it’s even more sensi-”
Let me tell you, red, sore, peeling skin and water blisters are no fun at the best of times, let alone when they make a penis look like a reject from German MasterChef .
I never saw Guy again, but Lauren and I went back for years, followed by a slew of friends I guided on their first naked expeditions. There’s sometimes a moment just after you arrive but before you undress where you both… pause. Neither wants to be the first to start. Don’t get lost here! If you draw it out, it’s just going to be weirder. I suggest simply staring out at the water and begin undoing buttons, chatting normally.
The most surprising thing people find is how quickly the whole set-up feels normal. There’s something about the lack of clothes that facilitates profounder conversations, too. I’ve found myself having the kind of deep and meaningful convos about life and love that normally need a bottle of wine to tease out. Shedding your clothes seems to shed the inhibitions and topics flow more freely. Don’t get too relaxed, though...
As Seinfeld attested, there are things best avoided while baring it all. Few of you will look like scenes from that film where a young Helen Mirren skinny dipped and should keep this in mind. Bending over or stretching can benefit from forethought here. As a chubby guy, I learnt this all too well when I ran towards the little boat that sells ice creams and saw my friends' faces – faces which didn’t ever need to see that much unrestrained flopping and jiggling.
There is one other danger – there’s something powerful and heady about taking someone you love to the nude beach, something I learnt all too well when I took a serious girlfriend there for the first time.
The sun was shining, the water was clear and she was beautiful. Suddenly, right there in the surf, I found myself asking her to marry me. No, I didn’t hide a ring in my bottom like Bear Grylls did for his beach proposal , but we both got wholly swept up in the moment.
There’s something pure, connective and true about being naked with one another in nature, but it can also be intoxicating. Knee-jerk proposals can be great, but this one was not, and I doubt it would have happened if we hadn’t been at that beach. We broke up a few short months later.
If you’ve never been to a nude beach I encourage you to go, just remember that sunburn, friendships and relationships all continue once your undies slide back up.
