Raleigh, N.C. — Two might be Amari's favorite number. He entered the world on Feb. 2, 2022 at 2:22 p.m.
"We didn't even think about it in the moment," said Amari's mom, Jerri Pitre. "You're just like, you know, I want to get the baby here and I want everything to go smoothly and safely. And so it didn't really even dawn on us until we spoke to a family member shortly after and they were like, '2-2-22 at 2:22,' and then it kind of hit us -- that is really special and unique."
Jerri said Amari's birth was much easier than the birth of her first child, Willow, when she was induced and in labor for days.
Jerri was also scheduled to be induced with Amari but went into labor naturally the day before he was born at UNC Rex.
If his birth day and time weren't enough of a coincidence, Amari weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 21 inches long -- making him the exact same size at birth as his big sister, who turned three in November.
To protect newborn Amari from the threat of COVID-19, Jerri and her husband, Marvin, took Willow out of early preschool several weeks before Amari was born.
"This is a pretty rough season at daycare," Jerri said, adding that some kids had recently battled RSV, a highly contagious respiratory virus, and COVID-19.
The proud mom has spent the last week at home bonding with Amari, who is much more mild-tempered than Willow was as a baby, Jerri laughed.
"He only gets a little frustrated when he's ready to eat," she said.
Amari is also very observant, Jerri says.
"He looks at my face a lot and sleep smiles a lot. And he has the cutest little dimples. He's a sweet baby."
Jerri said her pregnancy was difficult at times, but Amari's birth was fairly quick. There was one catch -- the entire family tested positive for COVID-19 a week before his birth.
"I was like, this is the worst time this could have happened, but we survived and I got to pass those antibodies to him," she said.
Giving birth in an N95 mask was much different than when Willow was born, when Jerri's family and friends visited the hospital.
"I definitely think it's very rare and special," Jerri emphasized. "I'm just glad that he was able to get here safe -- and no one should ever forget his birthday."
