A FORMER teacher who tied and gagged boys before photographing them for his sexual gratification had ''close to zero empathy'' for his victims, a court heard yesterday.
George Iliakis, 36, a former grade 6 teacher at Brighton Grammar, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to charges including accessing child pornography, using the internet to transmit child pornography and procuring children for sexual activity.

Commonwealth prosecutor Krista Breckweg alleged that in 2003 Iliakis joined a members-only internet chat room known as a source of child pornography.
She said using the name ''Mr Teacherman'', he shared images including ''36 child abuse images and one child abuse video … all of this material was taken by the offender himself''.
The court heard the photographs featured objects later taken from the offender's home, including silver handcuffs, a wooden bench and a tiger-print blanket.
The prosecution alleged Iliakis made a film involving boys he met while directing a play at the Beaumaris Theatre Group and working as a patrol and committee member at Aspendale Lifesaving Club.
Ms Breckweg said Iliakis asked two boys, 13, if they wanted to act in a film he was making called ''Sleepers and Studs'' about teenage children having trouble at home.
One victim later identified himself in photos found on Iliakis' computer in which the boy was tied to a brown table by the hands and feet and lying topless on a tiger print blanket and bound to the bed with blue rope.
Of the pornographic material found on Iliakis' computer, defence counsel Michael Tovey, QC, said ''the overwhelming majority of it was the lowest level''.
''My client instructs that is the level he was most interested in,'' said Mr Tovey.
''What he transmitted was those photographs or film, what were role-playing activities. My client is adamant he has never done anything to hurt a child.''
Mr Tovey said that when Iliakis was nine a neighbour had raped him and Iliakis was ''ruthlessly bullied'' at high school.
When Iliakis was 20 his mother ''sent him to Daily Planet to have sex with prostitutes''.
Psychologist Jeffrey Cummins told the court Iliakis had ''close to zero empathy'' with his victims, and had only ''minimal'' insight into his behaviour. The psychologist said Iliakis' behaviour blurred the boundaries between fantasy and reality.
''It is a concern for rehabilitation, but he has been very motivated to receive treatment,'' he said, adding that he thought it ''unlikely'' Iliakis would reoffend.
The prosecution recommended a jail sentence of between 2½ and 4½ years.
Judge Susan Pullen remanded Iliakis for sentencing on February 18.

Two underage boys were tied up and kept in a man's house overnight, after one entered his daughter's room with a knife.
According to a police document filed last week a young male went into Mohamed Mohamed-Sidik's house in West Valley City, Utah on August 17 to visit his underage daughter.
The girl then yelled for her father, who entered the room and grabbed the child.

The man, with the help of his son, proceeded to strip and tie up the boy-leaving him nude in the house.
In an odd twist Mohamed-Sidik forced the tied-up boy to call his underage male friend who was waiting outside to enter the house.
Upon entering the home the boy was apprehended by Mohamed-Sidik and like his friend was bound by rope although he remained fully clothed.
The victims and the man's children cannot be named because they are underage.
The police report says the man held the boys at knife point and took everything from the victims' pockets including cell phones, cigarettes, gum and a knife.
The two boys in a witness statement also said they were threatened and kept tied up for eight hours over night until they were released in the morning.

Upon being freed they said the man gave them some of their items, money and allowed to leave.
However Mohamed-Sidik kept the knife, cigarette and gum. He gave the police the remaining items when he was taken in for questioning.
He also gave officers the rope he used to tie up the two victims.
Mohamed-Sidik and his son admitted to tying up the boys and withhold their possessions, according to the Salt Lake Country Sheriff's Office.
He is facing charges including aggravated kidnapping, robbery and assault.
