Lesbians and gay men have become normalized in pop culture to a point that terms we use to describe one another have become more commonplace. I was even asked by co-worker to define another staff member by these images.
In an effort to explain some differences, here’s how body image types break down for gay men.
So let’s start with twinks. Generally speaking, these are younger gay men who have a thin to slimly athletic build. Also, they don’t have a lot of body hair, and the chest is usually smooth.
Some guys will shave their chests and armpits to conform to this body image. I think that the term came from Twinkies. You know — young, dumb and full of … moving on.
Up next are the otters. They tend to be hairier overall, still with that thin to slimly athletic build. I’ve seen guys of various ages take the image label of an otter, though it tends to be men under 40.
Closely related to the otters are the foxes. Basically a fox is an otter over forty. One buddy of mine described foxes as the cougars of the gay male community.
Then we have the bears. Like otters, men of various ages identify as a bear. These are larger-bodied or muscular-bodied men that have body hair. Think about the large-bodied construction workers that you may see on Caltrans job sites or a furry bodybuilder.
Finally we have cubs. These are the bears that don’t have body hair.
Sometimes there may be a reference to a gay man as a daddy. While this generally is used to describe the elder partner in a cross-generational relationship, there is a component of dominance when it is used as a self-identifier.
On top of all that there are those who identify as chasing a certain type. Bear-chaser, twink-chaser, etc.
People should be careful applying these terms to gay men they know. Some of us are extremely sensitive to the type we identify with.
At the end of the day, these are often the terms used to filter results on Grindr, the gay Tinder, or other such dating (I mean “dating”) websites or apps. These terms don’t reflect the many variations of men’s bodies. Some people reject these images altogether.
While these images may seem humorous, on the surface they still reflect a society that places too much importance on such trivial things. Despite the widespread use of these terms, they still carry their own stereotypes.

I think the mask man is def more hunkish Twink than anything even remotely resembling bear territory
this is jock erasure and i will NOT stand for it 😤
Shit you're right. I was thinking that Caspar's position just didn't seem right and now I know what was missing
So, if we separate these triangles into 4, we can see what specialties each house as well as the neutral units have.
Black Eagles: Two twinks, a neutral, and a hunk. For the other houses we’ll have to put the majority being in twinks to the side, because every house has two twinks in it and it just makes everything unbalanced. However, Ferdinand being the closest of the neutrals to the twink category means that the Black Eagles are probably the closest to the twink house.
Blue Lions: Again, two twinks, but we now have Dimitri as a neutral as well as Dedue, and Sylvain is in the Hunk category. With both neutrals being on the hunky side, I’ll say the Blue Lions is the Hunk class.
Golden Deer is the closest to true neutral. Two twinks, Claude’s in the Hunk classification, and Raphael is easily the bear.
Neutral alliance: Bear, easily. Jeralt offsets the group from the beginning and Alois and Gilbert don’t help that. That deadly trio dooms the whole group to bear from the beginning.
I hope this helped people figure out who to go for.
Thank you for this valuable analysis. These are the things that really must be considered carefully before choosing a house.
So what you're saying is, the Neutral party likes hugs the most?
Clearly the way of people of culture (DEDUE)
While I get why Byleth is in the center with no leaning, let's be real the mans a twunk
I know this is more or less just a meme but it honestly makes me really happy to see the gay community in FE being a little more visible. I was getting downvoted earlier this year for wanting same sex options in 3H so it's nice to see posts like this recieve a lot of positive attention.
I'm still delighted to see how quickly the young/adult community has done a 180 on humour surrounding homosexuality. Its gone from "you're gay" as the automatic insult that everyone recognises because "who'd want to be gay, lol", to casually embracing the idea that "fuck it, I might not be gay but I can still meme how good looking some guys are".
My Gay senses are tingling.... Caspar should be bearish hunk after the time skip .
So that's why I'm joining Blue lions. For that Twunk Jush
Linhardt is full twink, I’m sorry, I will not be taking questions at this time.
Tfw when the most attractive bear in this game is your dad :( we need more bears, dammit
Post-time skip Raphael better look like the Mountain, with a smile that lights up the room or the lead character artist failed.
Makes me think of twink Ike and twonk Ike in Smash Ultimate

Gay slang originated out of necessity. Gay men wanted to be able to speak in public without revealing their sexuality, especially in places and times of extreme LGBTQ+ persecution. Thus, gay lexicon was born. Over the years, gay slang has evolved, and it’s sometimes tough to keep up. So here they are, all the creatures in the queer animal kingdom, fully explained. We’ll start off with the ones you’re more likely to know, and then move into some of the less common critters.
Ah, the bears, one of the oldest and largest subgroups of the gay community. Bears are on the heavier side, either muscular, beefy, or chunky. The wouldn’t dream of shaving their body hair (which comes in abundance) and they usually have a full beard to match. They exude masculinity, and are some of the kindest men you’ll meet in your entire life. There are many subtypes of bears, like a polar bear, which is a older bear with white hair.
A baby bear. As bears are typically older men, cubs are younger ones. Large, hairy guys in their teens and 20’s who are on their way to becoming a bear.
A twink is the polar opposite of a bear. Skinny and hairless and often a little more on the feminine side. Chicken is a word used to describe a young twink and twunk is a more muscular twink (think Justin Bieber).
Someone who’s in between a twink and a bear. Medium build and hairy. Otters come in all ages with all different types of facial hair. Otters often trim their chest hair and manscape their bodies, but always leave at least some hair.
Similar to an otter, a wolf has some hair and is in between a twink and a bear. However, there are some key differences between wolves and otters. Wolves typically have a lean, muscular build and are sexually aggressive.
The gay man who spends every waking minute at the gym, talking about how he needs to go to the gym, or how he’s coming from the gym.
As you might imagine, pigs are more focused on sex than anything else, often into kinkier and somewhat seedier sexual practices.
An older man who sexually pursues younger chickens/twinks/twunks.
Urban Dictionary has the best definition, “A bisexual person, usually though not always female, who is willing to join an existing couple, often with the presumption that this person will date and become sexually involved with both members of that couple, and not demand anything or do anything that might cause problems or inconvenience to that couple.” They're called unicorns, because bisexuals like these don't (or rarely) exist.
As part of pup play, a form of kink that is becoming more popular in the gay community. Men act as puppies and have handlers. The handler treats their puppies like they would their own dog, with love and affection. It’s a great introduction for gay men interested in kink and has a pretty relaxed power dynamic as far as kink goes.
Hunky, muscular bodybuilders who weigh 200+ pounds. These men are big, strong and have muscles you didn’t even know existed.
