Twink And Bear
Gay slang originated out of necessity. Gay men wanted to be able to speak in public without revealing their sexuality, especially in places and times of extreme LGBTQ+ persecution. Thus, gay lexicon was born. Over the years, gay slang has evolved, and it’s sometimes tough to keep up. So here they are, all the creatures in the queer animal kingdom, fully explained. We’ll start off with the ones you’re more likely to know, and then move into some of the less common critters.
Ah, the bears, one of the oldest and largest subgroups of the gay community. Bears are on the heavier side, either muscular, beefy, or chunky. The wouldn’t dream of shaving their body hair (which comes in abundance) and they usually have a full beard to match. They exude masculinity, and are some of the kindest men you’ll meet in your entire life. There are many subtypes of bears, like a polar bear, which is a older bear with white hair.
A baby bear. As bears are typically older men, cubs are younger ones. Large, hairy guys in their teens and 20’s who are on their way to becoming a bear.
A twink is the polar opposite of a bear. Skinny and hairless and often a little more on the feminine side. Chicken is a word used to describe a young twink and twunk is a more muscular twink (think Justin Bieber).
Someone who’s in between a twink and a bear. Medium build and hairy. Otters come in all ages with all different types of facial hair. Otters often trim their chest hair and manscape their bodies, but always leave at least some hair.
Similar to an otter, a wolf has some hair and is in between a twink and a bear. However, there are some key differences between wolves and otters. Wolves typically have a lean, muscular build and are sexually aggressive.
The gay man who spends every waking minute at the gym, talking about how he needs to go to the gym, or how he’s coming from the gym.
As you might imagine, pigs are more focused on sex than anything else, often into kinkier and somewhat seedier sexual practices.
An older man who sexually pursues younger chickens/twinks/twunks.
Urban Dictionary has the best definition, “A bisexual person, usually though not always female, who is willing to join an existing couple, often with the presumption that this person will date and become sexually involved with both members of that couple, and not demand anything or do anything that might cause problems or inconvenience to that couple.” They're called unicorns, because bisexuals like these don't (or rarely) exist.
As part of pup play, a form of kink that is becoming more popular in the gay community. Men act as puppies and have handlers. The handler treats their puppies like they would their own dog, with love and affection. It’s a great introduction for gay men interested in kink and has a pretty relaxed power dynamic as far as kink goes.
Hunky, muscular bodybuilders who weigh 200+ pounds. These men are big, strong and have muscles you didn’t even know existed.

Gay Blog Towleroad: More than gay news | gay men
Business analyst Dusty Fuller, who gained 100 pounds in order to become a “bear,” posted a 5-year body transformation photo to Twitter which is going viral.

Fuller told GSN : “My weight gain was on purpose. I used to strive to be a huge muscled dude with abs. I started lifting weights in 2012 and worked hard at lifting and counting calories and macros for a few years. However, I just wasn’t increasing my size like I wanted to. I had always been envious of beefier muscled bears, so in 2015 I decided to go that route to increase my size…I wanted to become a Bear.”
Fuller, who said he lifts weights four days a week, and consumes 4,000 to 5,000 calories, said he’s aware of the health risks faced by heavier people, and said he watches his carefully: “My health takes priority over my weight and size.”

Fuller, who goes by “Cubby” on Twitter, has received much praise for going for the ursine version of himself.

Earlier this year, The Advocate rated America’s gayest cities of 2013. Atlanta scored high marks, landing it in the ninth spot. Even though the criteria was half serious, half bogus, I do agree that Atlanta is pretty gay.
Earlier this month, a friend rated gays in Atlanta among the most diverse she has seen. Even though her criteria was pretty stereotyped, she did have a point. There are lots of gays out here and many straight people have trouble telling them apart.
So to my fellow Atlantans, straight and gay, here is a quick list to help you know what type of gay you’re dealing with. This list isn’t inclusive of all facets of gay life, but it should get the average sir or madam by.
BEAR (n.) – These gays are typically hairy and sporting some kind of facial hair. Bears are often muscular, stocky or overweight and tend to pride themselves on their inherent masculinity. Although the largest of the gays, bears are usually friendly and overall good guys. They aren’t the type to pick a fight or cuss you out, but if provoked their pack will assemble and claw you to shreds. At a bar, you’ll see them wearing flannel shirts, baseball caps and boots. They will probably be drinking beer.
OTTER (n.) – Technically this is a subcategory of bear, but otters make up a big enough chunk of the population to deserve their own section. Otters share many of the same characteristics of bears but they have leaner, swimmer’s builds. Will from “Will & Grace” is perhaps the best otter reference.
TWINK (n.) – These gays are often younger than thirty years old and look like they could use a burger or five. They almost completely lack hair and seem to be waiting for puberty to hit. Basically, they are the opposite of bears. Traditionally, these gay men are where the general effeminate men stereotypes stem from. Although not physically dangerous, twinks are known for their sharp tongues. Twinks can be seen at clubs drinking fruity mixed drinks, shopping at Abercrombie & Fitch or grabbing a salad with a girlfriend.
I think this is what my friend meant when she said that Atlanta was diversely gay. There really are a lot of gays out there, and although some fall into the bear, otter or twink category, most don’t fit into a neat little box. There are more classifications that attempt to fix this problem, but if you need more information, I suggest you hit up a couple of gay bars or make some gay friends

In the spirit of combating stereotypes by reclaiming and celebrating them, BBDO NY Art Director James Kuczynski and illustrator Paul Tuller have created a “Guide to Gay Stereotypes,” a series of silk screened images capturing the essence of your neighborhood gay archetypes.
The posters, released this week as we head into Pride season , celebrate the recent Supreme Court decision on DOMA. They present portraits of gay stereotypes including the The Bear, The Otter, The Twink, The Twunk, The Drag Queen, and The Butch. The posters are available for $18 each, and some of the proceeds will go to the “Think B4 You Speak” campaign, which supports LGBT teens and raises awareness about homophobia and the use of terms like “That’s so gay,” “Dyke” and “Faggot.”
Kuczynski says he found himself in a gay bar one night listening in on some dudes talking about what stereotypical categories they belonged in. “The topic, well, it just made me chuckle,” he says. “It got me thinking how many stereotypes there are really in the LGBTQ community. I don’t even know. It’s interesting how certain people relate to themselves as a certain type or label especially when going out and having fun, while others are repulsed by the idea of fitting into a label. It seemed like an interesting area to explore.”
Says Tuller on his interest in the project: “First and foremost is my love of drawing hairy men. Second is my interest in how these labels have been reclaimed by the LGBTQ community as something lighthearted, erotic, comical, or otherwise endearing. Labels of any kind can be polarizing and exclusive, but at some point the community reclaimed these words as something more, and I wanted to celebrate that.”
Meet the stereotypes in the slide show above.
