But turtles don't only use their penises to mate. Sometimes they just hang around and unfurl them as a sort of aggressive show of big-dickness. Sometimes males will distend their organ neither while mating, nor while in the presence of females. Usually while bathing or drinking, the turtle will submerge...

How big is the phallus of a turtle?
Without getting too deeply into a biological vocabulary that I fear I lack the science chops to wield effectively, here's an important takeaway: turtle dicks are fucking enormous. In many species, the length of the phallus can extend to half the length of the entire animal. That would be like a person having a three foot cock.

Such organs occur in many animals, both vertebrate and invertebrate, but males do not bear a penis in every animal species, and in those species in which the male does bear a so-called penis, the penises in the various species are not necessarily homologous.
The term penis applies to many intromittent organs, but not to all. As an example, the intromittent organ of most cephalopoda is the hectocotylus, a specialized arm, and male spiders use their pedipalps. Even within the Vertebrata there are morphological variants with specific terminology, such as hemipenes.
In most species of animals in which there is an organ that might reasonably be described as a penis, it has no major function other than intromission, or at least conveying the sperm to the female, but in the placental mammals the penis bears the distal part of the urethra, which discharges both urine during urination and semen during copulation.

Home Pure Science Animals Turtle Penis Looks Terrifying. How Turtles Do It?
The largest penis in animal kingdom is belong to the blue whales. It is commonly cited as having an average penis length of 2.5 metres to 3 metres. But the weirdest penis goes to the turtles!
Their penises can stretch up to half of the length of their body and the shape is like flower. To rectify this mystery, let’s get to know turtle before we discuss about their sex organ!
Sea turtles are large, air-breathing reptiles that inhabit tropical and subtropical seas throughout the world. Their shells consist of an upper part and a lower section. Hard scales cover all but the leatherback is call scute. Number and arrangement of these scutes can be used to determine the species.
Sea turtles come in many different sizes, shapes and colors. The olive ridley is usually less than 100 pounds. Meanwhile, the leatherback typically ranges from 650 to 1,300 pounds. The upper shell, or carapace, of each sea turtle species ranges in length, color, shape and arrangement of scales.
Sea turtles do not have teeth, but their jaws have modified “beaks” suited to their particular diet. They do not have visible ears but have eardrums covered by skin. Their vision underwater is good, but they are near-sighted out of water.
Their streamlined bodies and large flippers make them remarkably adapted to life at sea. However, sea turtles maintain close ties to land. Females must come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Therefore, all sea turtles begin their lives as tiny hatchlings on land.
If you ask any experts about turtles’ sex life, most of them will come back with some stories. The male turtle somehow has a terrifying sex organ. You might find something in the following article that you never learn before in science classes.
• The Terrifying Sex Organs of Male Turtles
Believe it or not, turtles’ genital is one of the strangest genitals in animal kingdom. Hydraulic intromittent male sexual organs is a general term for an external organ of a male organism that is specialized to deliver sperm during copulation. There are variety of animals and that’s why it is not unique, and it is also present in turtles.
Intromittent organs are found most often in terrestrial species. It can be found on most non-mammalian aquatic species fertilize their eggs externally. But also, there are exceptions. For many species in the animal kingdom, the male intromittent organ is a hallmark characteristic of internal fertilization.
The turtle penis contains only one vascular erectile body and develops on the ventral surface of the cloaca. This is where the mammal penis contains two erectile bodies and is derived from non-cloacal tissue.
As shown by Kelly, male intromittent organs therefore arose independently among tetrapods on more than one occasion. The turtle penis is, a hydraulic cylinder that becomes engorged by fluid and is relatively resistant to bending when erect. Diane Kelly is an assistant professor from University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Its single erectile body is divided into a collagenous corpus fibrosum. It is highly vascularized, expandable corpus spongiosum.
As a turtle’s penis inflates, its length may increase by nearly 50%. Its width by 75%, and its depth by 10%. Even an uninflated penis that tucked away inside the cloaca is large. A pair of long retractor muscles extend for most of the length of the organ’s dorsal surface, and attach within the body cavity to the lumbar vertebrae.
When at rest, the penis is doubled up on itself within the cloaca. It’s the contraction of the retractor muscles that causes it to un-double and protrude (Gadow 1887). During erection, the penis first emerges pointing posteriorly.
As the size and tension increases, the penis bends ventrally and then slightly anteriorly. Turtle penis retractor muscles were ‘physiologically rugged’ and of ‘extreme endurance’. Collagen fibres reinforce the penis wall and are arranged either along, or perpendicular, to the organ’s long axis.
In this respect, the turtle penis is superficially similar to a mammalian one. However, while the mammal penis only has one layer, the walls of the turtle penis have multiple layers of fibres. This array of stiffening collagenous fibres is still highly similar in turtles and mammals.
Turtle and mammal penis designs are anatomically convergent. The strong similarity observed in the erectile organs of these phylogenetically disparate groups suggests that there are few functional solutions permitting the evolution of cylindrical and inflatable intromittent organs.
In terms of overall macrostructure, the turtle penis consists of a shaft and a distinct head, or glans, that’s typically dark grey, purple or blackish. A long seminal groove, surrounded on both sides by raised ridges (termed seminal ridges), extends from the urethral opening down at the base of the penis to the glans.
Obviously, we’re talking here of an exposed groove, not an enclosed internal tube like that present in mammals. Mammals are actually unusual in possessing an enclosed tube in the penis. Seminal grooves are the norm when we look at the organs of lizards and snakes, crocodiles and birds.
The seminal ridges in a turtle are right next to the glans. Near the glans, they’re surrounded on both sides by fissures, or sinuses. These structures, associated with mobile skin folds, give the glans an alien-like.
Turtles seem to be able to control the movements of the ridges around the seminal groove as well as the openings and folds on the head of the glans. The structures on the upper surface of the glans can in fact open and close, in ‘flower-like’ fashion, in a sort of pulsing or throbbing motion.
The precise configuration of sinuses and associated folds, and thus the overall form of the glans, varies from group to group. Some of the configurations involved look terrifying and others look really horrible. The penis as a whole is seemingly simplest in sea turtles.
Here, the glans is pointed, with the seminal groove terminating in a single deep fold. The thickness of the glands is depending on the type of species. Some of them are broad and fat.
Modern sea turtles have been around for more than 100 million years. Given the ancient reptiles’ longevity, one might expect the animals to have a highly successful breeding system. So just how do sea turtles do it?
Seven species of sea turtles exist today, including the leatherback, flatback, hawksbill, loggerhead, Kemp’s ridley, olive ridley and green sea turtle. Across all species, sea turtles are, for the most part, loners that only come together during the mating season. But this isn’t necessarily true for all populations.
For example, green sea turtles are known to spend quite a bit of time together all year round. For each sea turtle population, the mating season typically occurs when the length of the day and local temperature begin to increase. This is likely because incubation temperature drives the determination of each hatching’s sex.
Warmer temperatures produce females and cooler temperatures produce males. So adults need to lay their eggs when the temperature is just right to produce both male and female hatchings. What they really want is a nesting season where the incubation temperature is sitting around 29 degrees Celsius.
During this time, breeding females and males both return to the beaches where they hatched. Females know it’s a suitable nesting location, while males know they’ll find females there. Males generally arrive much earlier than females, because sea turtle mating runs on a first-come-first-serve basis.
As is the case with most other species, males will mate with any female they can. But female sea turtles aren’t very choosy either. They don’t seem to actively seek out the best and fittest males.
To mate, a male will climb onto a female’s back while she is swimming horizontally in the water. On their front flippers, males have long claws. They will use their claws to hook on to the leading edge of the female’s shell. These claws are quite sharp and will often cut into the female’s soft flesh near her shell.
Male and female sea turtles have cloaca. Both have waste and reproductive orifices at the base of their tails, and the male’s cloaca houses his penis. During mating, the male will reach his tail underneath the back end of the female’s shell.
His long penis, which can be almost half the length of his shell, will emerge from his cloaca to penetrate and inseminate the female’s cloaca.
According to Dave Owens, the male can hang on for up to 24 hours. Dave Owens is a marine biologist at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. By remaining attached to the female, the male can prevent other males from mating with her.
After the pair separates, they go on to mate with other sea turtles. The female stops mating once she has enough sperm to fertilize all of her clutches for the season. If a male approach her, there is a possibility that the female will rip the male apart.
Mating done, the female will climb on to the beach, lay her first clutch of eggs, bury them under sand and then return to the water. About two weeks later, she’ll return to the beach to lay her second clutch. In a single season, the female may lay up to eight clutches before leaving the nesting grounds.
When the next breeding season rolls around, the male sea turtles return to the nesting site and begin the love game with new females. Females from the previous season, on the other hand, don’t come back for another few years. This is likely due to the energy required to produce those hundreds of eggs.
However, turtles with their erected penis can achieve 20-cm long and spike-tipped penises. Consider in what we now know about play behaviour in turtles, they expose their impressive genitals for fun or when bored.
There is much more to discover about tortoise sex such as studies of the hydraulic mechanics of their erections. But for now, this is just about everything that we have about turtle penises in this article.
