If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a flock of fall turkeys before you see them, and on that afternoon, I did. I heard the contented feeding sounds of the hens, along with the occasional strident calls from their leader.
I remained seated in my treestand, while I was bowhunting for deer, squinted my eyes nearly shut and pressed my back into the tree, determined not to let the boss hen see me. I’d become convinced that she had a calendar tucked away somewhere, and knew exactly when Pennsylvania’s fall turkey season opened.
The previous year, also while bowhunting for deer, she’d led her flock past me and other friends nearly every day, but never while turkeys were in season. And each day, she’d spotted us in our treestands and let the forest know that danger was in the area, striding around beneath us and making her alarm clucking sound.
One Smart Turkey
Flash forward, and this year was starting out the same way. As the flock strolled by to my left, contentedly scratching in the leaves and calling quietly to each other, the big hen walked to the base of my tree as if she could scent trail me. She peered up as I muttered threats into my facemask.
She got me again, triumphantly putting her alarm and sending the flock running. Soon, my portable radio was clicking in my pocket. My friend Barry was trying to contact me, and I hoped he’d arrowed a deer.
"I’m starting to hate that hen," he said. "She just got me again."
When archery season ended, I concentrated on bagging the big hen. On successive days, I got closer and it became an obsession.
The first day, the flock flew down but headed the wrong way, making a beeline to a cut soybean field. I’d put out a decoy, but not in a place where they could see it. They flew down so close to the field that they barely called themselves, going directly to the field.
The second day, I set up where I could intercept them between the roost and the field, but they hadn’t roosted there. I didn’t hear or see any turkeys, but checked the field at mid-morning using binoculars. A bunch of turkeys were out there.
Obsessed With Boss Hen
I set up in nice cover, guessing at where they’d exit the field, basing my bet on the location of a small stream and a line of hemlocks. I was off by about 80 yards! And again, they weren’t calling, just hurrying through that relatively open area of forest to reach the cover of the hemlocks. I ran at them but couldn’t get close enough to bust up the flock.
The third day, I set up in the intercept area, but I’d gotten too close. They’d heard or seen me set up from the roost. As the woods lightened, the turkeys I could see shuffled on their roost branches, nervous about the thing in the woods. With great branch crashing, they flew down in the opposite direction.
On the fourth day, I returned to my original tree. I arrived extremely early, and with greater knowledge of the area, positioned a hen decoy at a little crest in the woods. If they flew down and headed for the bean field, they’d surely spot that decoy.
Handy in my jacket pocket I had a Knight & Hale call named The Raspy Old Hen (not a big stretch for me). I couldn’t believe how my heart started to thud when I heard a few hen clucks in the dark. Maybe today would be the day.
The turkeys flew down as they had the first day, visible in the air, but landing over the crest of the hill. Right away, I could hear a boss hen calling. Hoping she was responding to the sight of the decoy, which was a big hen, I called right back at her.
I’m not a great turkey caller. I can purr some and yelp some. But I am a pretty good mimic. Whatever the hen said, I said, only with more volume and with as much sass as I could add. Almost as soon as I’d answered her, the sounds of scratching and rustlings stopped. I could imagine them all standing there, heads cocked like the RCA dog. Who was that?
Decoy Brings Them In
The hen barked instructions again, and again, I responded in the same cadence. The leaf rustlings began again with the sound of turkeys running. At first I was disappointed, thinking I’d spooked them, but quickly realized they were coming my way, en masse.
I got my shotgun to my shoulder and pointed it in that direction, just in time. The turkeys were running toward me, with Miss Boss in the lead. I put my little green dot on the base of her neck and squeezed the trigger. The blast lifted her off her feet, nearly cartoon like, and she dropped flapping to the forest floor.

I’d taken two deer during the archery season, but I didn’t remember feeling the same level of elation. And I know most turkey hunters want a gobbler, something with a huge beard and spurs.
This hen had neither, but she had another trait not so easily seen. She was savvy, a behavior learned in a couple seasons of successfully eluding predators, humans and animals, and a behavior enhanced by the responsibility of being boss of the flock.
I’d started my fall turkey hunt with the yen to "get even" with the big hen, but that feeling had changed. Instead, I’d found myself thoroughly enjoying the challenge.
I knew another hen would step forward to take her place. I looked forward to matching wits with her next fall.
