Turkey Celebrates 96th Anniversary

The event that took place at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on Tuesday, 29 October 2019 was an occasion to chart the way forward.
Members of government, diplomatic corps and friends thronged the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on 29 October to celebrate the 96th Anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. The event presided at by the Turkish Ambassador to Cameroon, H. E Ayse Sarac, in the presence of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, was an opportunity to revisit the history of Turkey and throw light on the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Speaking during the celebration, the Turkish diplomat said, the proclamation of Turkey’s Independence under the leadership of the founding father of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 96 years ago inspired many other nations as Turkey to reflect the principles of democracy, secularism, the rule of law, the respect of human rights to become one of the most influential nations.
With this spirit, she went on, Turkey is proud to be an indispensable actor in the international scene thanks to its dynamic and growing economy, young population, active diplomacy and solid institutional structure. She added that apart from being the 13th largest economy in the world, her country is the world’s top donner in global humanitarian assistance when the ratio of official humanitarian assistance to national income is taken into consideration and the 5th largest diplomatic network in the world.
Ambassador Ayse Sarac noted with satisfaction that the 59-year-old bilateral relations between Turkey and Cameroon is waxing strong in the political, economic, commercial and social fields especially after the opening in 2010 of the Turkish Embassy in Yaounde and the inauguration in 2018 of Cameroon Embassy in Ankara. Turkish NGO’s are actively participating in development projects and providing scholarships to University students.
The Maarif Foundation offers international standards education with its 6 primary and secondary schools, while the Religious Affairs Coordinator has undertaken many charity projects to help the less privileged. The Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has conducted different projects with the most current being the Briqueterie District Public Health Improvement Project. The Japoma stadium under construction is also another example.
She added that her country is glad to observe a strong will in every corner of Cameroon to walk towards a better future and is closely observing the steps taken with the Grand National Dialogue towards the enhancement of national harmony within the Cameroonian society.
