Tumblr users enjoy asking existential questions almost as much as they enjoy reblogging gif sets of cats.

They’ve uncovered a lot over the years, so what was next on the agenda of philosophical debates? Shirt removal, obviously.
It all started when one Tumblr user posted the type of Tumblresque inquiry that can be found all over the site — typed in all caps and completely void of punctuation — ya know, that kind.

“BOYS TAKE OFF THEIR SHIRTS SO WEIRD THEY LIKE GRAB THE SHIRT FORM THE BACK OF THEIR NECK AND YANK IT OVER THEIR HEAD THAT IS SO SEXUAL I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW YOU DO IT BOYS,” peetasboxers, wrote.

And wait, girls always cross their arms in front and pull their shirt over their head “like a little show or unwrapping a present,” another pointed out.
But WHY? Tumblr was very curious, so naturally, they immediately launched an investigation “FOR SCIENCE!”

Experimentation was obviously the only way to get to the bottom of the puzzling question.

Guys tried the “girl” way while girls tried the “guy” way. Many users even posted gifs of themselves attempting the unfamiliar shirt removal.
It seemed they all reported difficulties and feelings of frustration. After guys got stuck and girls nearly pulled out their hair trying to remove their shirts the other way, one user figured it out.

It’s all in the design. Shirts made for girls have less armpit room, so raising your arms all the way up so they can just slip out is the way to go. Shirts made for guys are generally longer, so if you try to take them off in the crossed-arm fashion, you’re likely to get your head stuck.

Phew, glad to have that one off my mind. Thank you, Tumblr scientists.
