Middle school students reflected on what they are thankful for this season by creating original plate designs. Some expressed their creativity using drawing media to illustrate what they are thankful for, combining text and image; some shared their favorite meals or foods, and others participated in a “hand-turkey challenge” with an inventive twist! See some completed plates and works in progress here…
Middle School students at AOC participated in the international drawing challenge of “Inktober.” Each day in October, using only ink, and their imaginations, students created original works of art in their sketchbooks responding to specific word prompts. Students learned new vocabulary, brainstormed interpretations of word meanings, and visualized various artistic outcomes. In their “Inktober” sketchbooks, students were invited to explore the prompt of the day, or work more deeply on a previously begun sketch, ultimately layering their work with ink using a variety of pens from ball point, to gel pens, to felt tips of various sizes, brush pens, and markers. They also learned about ink sketching and shading techniques like hatching, cross-hatching and stippling, and how to incorporate a range of values: lights, mid-tones, and darks, to create three-dimensionality and depth. Many students chose to take their sketchbooks home and continue to draw on days they didn’t have art class!
In September, staff and students took a trip to Camp Jewell in Connecticut. They enjoyed team building and outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking, canoeing and campfire singing. Upon their return, students created comics and works of art illustrating their experiences.
In the first weeks of school, students collaborated to create “Exquisite Corpse” artworks, inspired by the Surrealists. The Surrealists were a group of artists in the 1920s who created artworks based on fantasy, dreams, and the subconscious. The “Exquisite Corpse” is a game played by taking turns drawing sections of a body on a sheet of paper folded to hide each individual section. The first player adds a head- then without knowing what the head looks like; the next artist adds a torso, and so on. In this way, a strange, often grotesque creature is born. Today artists continue to use the game to explore collaboration, partnership and inspire creativity.
Our first project for our Intro Unit is a decorated name “tent” card. Students use the Elements and Principles of Design, their creativity and personal style, and craftsmanship, to create original designs incorporating their names set in a unique artistic background. If they had their own fashion or product line, what would their label look like? How would they express their unique personalities and show their artistic ability and design sense? Students learned about the Elements and Principles of Art and Design, and used a rubric to self assess their work, focusing on SPACE/Balance, COLOR/Harmony and Contrast as well as Craftsmanship and Creativity. Here are some examples of completed projects from our fifth and sixth graders…

Thoughts From a Middle School Teacher
Musings from a middle school teacher on all things education, students, lesson planning, and the general out pouring of emotions that come from being a teacher.
Jonathan Van Ness makes a valuable statement on the importance of good teachers.
Time for a restful summer vacation. If you’re a teacher or a student, get some rest. See you all in September!
Yes, I am still here and yes we are still in school. My students have been watching the film version of The Outsiders since we finished reading it. Here are some of their responses:
1) Ohhhhhh miss the guy who plays Sodapop is so cute! What’s his name? Rob Louie?
4) Hey that’s the guy from Dirty Dancing! (Bless one of my students for knowing that)
5) Isn’t the kid who plays Johnny also Daniel from the Karate Kid?
My students when they read the end of The Outsiders:
So I emailed my Assistant Principal about how two students did not deserve to go on any field trips for the rest of the school year because of their behavior and I wanted to let their parents know. She said no because we “needed something to barter with” regarding behavior.
Today, those same two students were running around the hallway like crazy. And after she had to deal with them and see how bad their behavior was, she said I could keep them off field trips for the rest of the year.
I know my homeroom kids, but this vindication was a great.
After the day I had, this feels appropriate. Happy June, children are actually animals now.
Doing anything to your hair as a teacher (like cutting it which I did this weekend) always garners the same three reactions:
3) But miss, why did you do that to your hair?
Also, one kid asked if I was wearing a wig. God bless middle schoolers.
