That is, if you even want to shave. You totally don't have to.
First things first: There's no one right way to deal with pubic hair. You can leave it how it grows, shave it into a shape, wax it off completely, trim it a little bit, or something else entirely—it's all fine. At the end of the day, how you decide to handle your body (including your pubic hair!) is entirely up to you. That being said, if you do decide to alter your pubic hair in some way, you want to be armed with the right tools and info to avoid getting any nicks, bumps, or razor burn because those can be uncomfortable anywhere, but especially down there. Read on for expert tips on how to shave your pubic hair and answers to all your questions about grooming.

We get it. You're bombarded by what seems like a million messages about pube grooming—friends who talk about being totally bare, waxing ads at every salon— and you're all like: Is this the norm? Am I a freak? Should I shave-it-all-off stat? But the truth is, some girls like a bare bikini area, while others get a little freaked by feeling exposed. Some may be into a little bit of a trim, but not all that psyched about the upkeep of taking all off.
Consider your pubic-hair stylings a very personal preference, says Jennifer Ashton, MD, an ob-gyn and author of The Body Scoop for Girls. Just like anything else you'd do to your bod—your haircut, your nail art, your makeup routine (or lack thereof)—go with what feels right for you.
Waxing is fine—and TBH, it will probably leave you with a smoother surface and slightly less frequent upkeep than shaving—but real talk: Ripping your hair out can be pretty painful. On the other hand, depilatory creams can be fairly painless, but you have to read the package and the instructions very carefully, because not all are made for the uber-sensitive skin of your vulva and bikini line. And even those that are can irritate—or burn—your skin if left on too long. Shaving, can feel like an easier and more familiar introduction to bikini-line grooming: You've been doing it to your legs, so you've got the basics down, right? Again, though, this decision is up to you. Do some research and pick what's best for your situation.

Let's say shaving is your choice for hair removal, there are still some specific steps you should take in order to make sure you're taking proper care of yourself down there. It sounds complicated, but just follow the steps below and you'll be smooth in no time.
Shaving will be so much easier when the hair is shorter. Just use a small pair of scissors or a hair trimmer and cut down on the hair so it's about a quarter of an inch long.
Professional Grooming Scissors for Personal Care
This step is important. "Any time you shave or wax, that hair follicle on your skin is going to be opened up," explains Dr. Ashton. "That makes it easy for bacteria to enter and cause an infection." So, you want to make sure the area is clean before you get to work. An exfoliant will remove dead skin and help to prevent ingrown hairs. Again, make sure you are using a simple product that won't irritate your skin. Also, remember that these products are not for inside your vagina, but simply the outer area.

One again, make sure you're choosing a simple shaving cream for sensitive skin. Then, dab it all over your pubic area.

It's finally time for the big shave. Since pubic hair is the thickest hair on your body, take a brand-new blade or a fresh-and-sharp disposable razor. Then shave downward *with* the hair, i.e. in the direction it's growing. Using small strokes and holding your skin taut with the other hand will help protect against nicks and cuts. And of course: Take. It. Slow.
Before you go completely bare though, keep in mind, certain areas are more sensitive and prone to redness and irritation. "It's best to leave the hair right around the vaginal opening alone, because the skin there is so sensitive," warns Dr. Holmes. "Trimming is fine, but shaving can create a problem."
Sensitive Women's Disposable Razors
After you're done shaving and you've rinsed away the excess cream, moisturize with a fragrance-free lotion.
Advanced Repair Lotion, Fragrance Free
According to Dr. Holmes, that's totally a myth. "It has a sharp edge after you shave, so it just feels thicker or coarser," she says. In reality, though, the hair hasn't changed.
So you shaved and now it's like your bikini line is breaking out on you. That's likely folliculitis, aka razor burn, and it happens when bacteria get inside those little hair follicles and inflame them, causing those prickly pink-and-white bumps you're seeing.
Many times this issue will resolve on its own within a few days, but in the meantime, you can soothe your skin by applying a little 1% hydrocortisone cream (available near the first aid stuff at the drugstore) or an ointment with vitamins A and D/zinc oxide (aka diaper rash cream).
If it doesn't clear up or it's driving you nuts, see your doctor for a prescription for an antibiotic. "It can really help," says Dr. Ashton.
It's as if the biggest, most painful pimple of your life has sprung up right by your swimsuit line, huh? Don't freak out, it might be an ingrown hair, which happens when dead skin cells clog up a hair follicle and force the hair that's inside to grow sideways under the skin (rather than up and out).
Resist the urge to dig or pick, and instead, treat it once a day with a mild toner containing salicylic acid, the same exfoliating ingredient used to beat acne. See a doc for treatment if the itching/burning/pain gets serious.

Sneaking scratches through your bikini bottoms is not a good look. Most likely, that itching is caused by prickly dry skin or some sort of inflammation. If you're shaving with soap, try switching to shaving cream, since it'll moisturize your skin a little more. And to prevent the tiny bumps and micro-nicks that cause aforementioned irritation, use a brand-new razor and warm water next time.

The 39 Most Naked Dresses of All Time
Naked dresses are perhaps the most impressive of all red carpet feats. While they may not always make the best-dressed list, they do require a certain breed of celebrity to pull off. Not only do you have to have the balls to risk a wardrobe malfunction, but you have to do it with enough confidence that you look fierce — not terrified — in the photographs. Take Naomi Campbell's appearance in Valentino's couture show during the spring/summer 2019 presentation. The legendary model gracefully strutted down the runway in a see-through gown with a ruffle skirt. (Click through the gallery for the NSFW photo). Get the inside scoop on all your favorite celebrities with our FREE daily newsletter, InStyle Celebrity. Breaking news, relationship updates, hairstyle inspo, fashion trends, and more direct to your inbox! Let's not forget Rihanna’s infamous CFDA dress either. The girl rocked a completely sheer dress without a bra — and later remarked that her only regret was not wearing a bedazzled thong to match. That, my friends, is dedication. Then, there was the year 2015, when the Met Gala saw not one nor two but three naked dresses on the red carpet, all worn by Hollywood’s hottest A-listers. Jennifer Lopez, above, bared her famous curves in a custom Atelier Versace illusion gown. Beyoncé was nearly naked in Givenchy. And Kim Kardashian West almost looked modest in comparison in her sheer Roberto Cavalli dress, because no one’s getting naked without KKW joining in. Whether you're new to shaving because you're a diehard waxer or you're looking to enhance your current at-home hair removal ritual, you've come to the right place.
While shaving is the most affordable way to remove hair from your pubic area, there's a right way of doing it to get a super smooth, razor bump-free finish.
Before getting into the nitty-gritty of how to shave your public area, let's set the record straight: there's no medical reason to remove your pubic hair. What you do and don't do to your body hair is entirely your choice and varies from person to person. Prefer to trim your pubes? That's great! Like to shave everything off? That's great too!
"Pubic hair is completely normal and, as long as routinely cleaned, it poses no health risks," says dermatologist Dr. Nadia Kihiczak of Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. "Some feel that more hair leads to more moisture, more odor and prefer to groom or completely remove the pubic hair."
Regardless of your personal preferences, pubic hair serves a purpose. "Pubic hair forms a protective barrier for the underlying delicate skin. It is believed to fend off pathogens, like bacteria and viruses, and is a shield for the skin from friction during sex," Dr. Kihiczak explains. "It also forms a natural cushion to the sensitive skin in the pubic area."
However, if you plan on shaving your pubic area in the foreseeable future, follow our expert guide on how to properly do it without getting razor burn or worse, cuts.
Shaving your pubic area should never, ever, be done while skin is dry. "Shaving of the pubic area should be the last step in your shower routine as the warm shower water preps the skin for shaving," says Dr. Kihiczak.
She suggests cleansing your skin with a loofah and a gentle, hydrating body wash like Dove or Cetaphil. "Use a gentle cotton wash cloth or loofah when cleansing the area and move it in a circular motion," she says. "This can help gently prep and exfoliate the skin before shaving and even 'dislodge' any early ingrown hairs that may be forming."
When it comes to shaving your nether region, angles are everything. Allie Melnick, general manager of Flamingo, recommends using the ledge of your tub to prop your foot up so you have better access of the area you're shaving.
Before picking up a razor, decide how much hair you're going to take off. "Grooming your pubic hair is as much about shaping as it is hair removal, so make a plan for how much you want to take off before you start," says Meknick.
Once you start to shave, always work in the direction of the hair growth. Going against the grain can result in redness, irritation, and ingrown hairs. If you're brave enough to shave around your vulva, take it slow and find a comfortable angle first.
And you can also use a shaving cream to help the razor glide smoothly. Flamingo makes a foaming gel that's formulated with soothing aloe vera and emollients to keep skin smooth.
Aside from not using a shave gel, Meknick says one of the biggest mistakes people make when shaving their pubic hair is using the wrong razor. "A fresh, sharp razor blade and a thick shave gel will make for a much more comfortable shave and protect against nicks, cuts, and irritation," she explains.
Dr. Kihiczak also stresses the importance of regularly changing your razor blade to prevent irritation or worse, bacteria from causing an infection. "The frequency of changing of the razor blade is determined by the frequency of shaving and the coarseness of the hair," she shares. "Single blade razors can be disposed of after each use. Razors with multiple blades can be used a few times, though any tugging, rubbing or nicking of the skin by the blade are a sign it should be changed immediately."
And don't wait for your razor blade to dull before switching it out. Dr. Kihczak says that old blades carry bacteria and increase the risk of infection or folliculitis, a condition where the inflamed hair follicles look like red bumps or whiteheads.
How often you shave you shave your pubic area depends on how close of a shave you're after. Dr. Kihczak says a close shave typically lasts one or two days and requires upkeep every two to three days.
After you step out of the shower and pat yourself down with towel, and don't forget your pubic area when you're applying body lotion. Use a hydrating cream or lotion that also gently exfoliates to prevent ingrown hairs. Dr. Kihczak is a fan of Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion.

Along with regularly moisturizing your pubic area post-shave, you can use a product that treats and prevents ingrown hairs. Fur's Ingrown Concentrate contains antibacterial tea tree and tamanu oils to eliminate excess oil and speed up cell renewal. Conditioning coconut oil and soothing chamomile extract round out the mix.
