The way they made Luke Skywalker look like an absolute saint though, tearing through the dark-troopers like it was nothing. The power he exuded, the smooth slices of the lightsaber, the flowing cape, the CHOIR that followed his arrival. Freaking utter perfection and everything he deserved.

I think we code their conflict as an age thing because we no longer see (and the creators, including Rev. Awdry himself, didn't have the nerve/acumen/gumption to own) that it was very much a class thing.
Like, not that we don't have massive socioeconomic inequalities today... but I also think a lot of fans don't grok just how far removed we are from 1940s Britain. Where it was less economic, and far more socio.
In their original conceptions, it wasn't that Gordon was older or wiser than Thomas at all. Gordon is the flashy new thing! Thomas was the most senior engine on the railway!
But it's hard for us to wrap our head around the fact that, nevertheless, they could both see Gordon as Thomas's superior.
Awdry did code a LOT of classism into his anthropomorphized engines. Not just in their relationships with humans—but with each other.
Just as an experiment, try imagining Thomas as, like... cheeky, hardscrabble, sharp-as-nails non-commissioned officer, who moved up through infantry ranks the hard way... but who can only rise so far. (And, never forget—because you know I'll never let you—he's a veteran!)
And then he has to start serving under some oblivious untried baby lieutenant who hasn't seen an hour of combat but heyyyyyyy he went to some bullshit officer's school or something. (Our working-class hero assumes they do nothing but learn to polish rifles, march in parades, and pair wine with cheese there. Also, he’s not entirely wrong.)
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Gresley is outraged at the idea that he has to *earn* respect from the rabble? They’re going (in proper military fashion) to haze the hell out of him despite his natural superiority by birth, wtf, what complete plonkers. Disgraceful!
But he does prove equal to the challenge. (Which is itself a constant irritation for Thomas. “Dammit, I didn't WANT to wind up admiring this insufferable wanker! Rich twit… Surprisingly sharp rich twit who can legit kick my ass...”)
This isn’t an exact analogy either, but I think it's far more accurate in some ways than "Gordon is stupid stuffy dad and Thomas is an eternal child.”
Stretching is important for everyone.
