What are the unsexy bits of voice acting? You know, things that may turn off people from the job or people know about but are a lot worse than they seem at first. I believe one example is having to record and rerecord lines until you essentially get it absolutely right.
1) With more and more studios requesting (or even requiring) you to submit from home, you have to become your own efficient DIRECTOR as well as performer. There is no one around to critique your performance on the spot and help you to refine it to just the right delivery; you could be an incredible actor when given the right nudges, but fail miserably at directing yourself to those reads on your own.
2) Time is money is deadline in the studio, so it’s very common for each line to be given 2-3 takes MAXIMUM before moving on to the next one, for better or for worse. Can’t seem to quite nail that scream or shout without your voice cracking? Better hope you get it within the allotted number of takes (or worked through other content faster than expected and thus have spare time) or else you’re gonna have to settle for a take you don’t like being in the final product.
3) You have absolutely no control over who gets cast and why. You could get cast because you’re the best choice, legitimately. Or you could get cast because someone was a better fit but sounded too close to Person B (who already recorded) so they needed better contrast and you were the back-up option. Or maybe you didn’t get cast because you were the 15th audition in line and the director ended up in such a rush that they only had time to listen to 12. Or maybe you didn’t get cast because you came in for a live audition and your face/clothing reminded the director of someone they absolutely hate (and they didn’t want that to distract them). Or maybe you got cast not because you were the best fit, but because you sounded good enough and your name/reputation was valuable enough that the company wants to use you for celebrity status (THIS HAS HAPPENED). The list goes on and on and on, and thinking about it will only needlessly stress you out.
4) What you want to do (role-wise) may not be what you are capable of doing vocally, and you will have to learn to accept that. If your natural vocal tone is Grizzled Western War Veteran a la Uncharted or Red Dead Redemption, it is very unlikely you will ever book a lead role as the 16 year-old naive but well-meaning Young Hero Protagonist - even if that’s your dream gig. You are taught early on to find your “wheelhouse” of voices that you can quickly/easily tap into, and to focus wholeheartedly on that to make your living BEFORE you can turn around and attempt to expand your repertoire.
5) You have to be invested in every moment of your performance. If you are exhausted from a long day and decide to send off some commercial auditions, every single one of your reads is going to have that tinge of “tired apathy” unless you force yourself to believe the copy (and your own words). If you’re smiling, the mic will pick it up; if you’re frowning, it will pick that up too. Your physical body pose and emotional status are every bit as much an ingredient to your vocal quality as your “actor face” is, and the entire process can be physically draining.
6) There is no job security. There is no job security. Unless you book a recurring national spot out of the 5,000+ other people who all wanted it more, you will spend the large majority of your time sending auditions…none of which you are paid for. Think of it this way: at a ‘typical’ job, you only have to pass the interview and be hired, and then you’re in until you quit or are let go; in voiceover, after every single job, you are responsible for convincing the (new) client to hire you every single time. Imagine if every few weeks/months you had to re-apply to your job and convince your boss you’re the best choice out of everyone else in order to keep it. Now consider if doing this was how you attempted to earn your food and rent for the month. But don’t let it frustrate you (see #5)!
7) Everything is on a delay. You will audition for Project A, but might not hear back about being cast on it for anywhere between 2 days, to 2 weeks, to 2 months, or even 2 YEARS after you submitted. When you finally record for it, your check will often be NET30 (within 30 days) or even NET90 (within three months) in terms of the deadline the company has to pay you. And since voiceover often takes places while the project is still in development (and thus under wraps news-wise), you won’t even get to talk about your accomplishment for another few months or potentially years. Voiceover is not a craft for people who need instant gratification, and it’s why you have to be so consistently self-driven; you have to constantly live & act in the present even though everything you’ve done won’t come to fruition until the far future.
For every cool role you guys see me announce on social media, there is a graveyard pile with about 20-50 fresh audition “corpses” for which I’ll never know the reason why I didn’t land the gigs - and more importantly, if that reason had to do with my acting choices or something else.
That is the reality of voice over. I’m not kidding when I say that my love of immersing myself into different worlds and interacting with the fanbases is a big part of what makes this fulfilling for me, because surrounding those moments of bliss is a day-in-day-out slog of perpetually hitting the pavement in top gear.
