The Church Of Bravangelism
Bra stuff, bra reviews, bravangelism

The breast root is the point on the body where the breast tissue starts and ends. Knowing the shape of your breast root is very important when trying to find a well-fitting bra, as it can dramatically affect the fit. But, a lot of new bravangelism converts will go from assessing their breast root shape into obsessing over trying to figure out if they’re FOT or FOB which I’ll get into later in this post, along with touching on a few more aspects that are important to fit (with links to further information).

Someone like myself who has shallow breasts will have the tissue spread out over a wider or taller root (where your breast meets your chest), while projected breasts have tissue that sticks out more and generally has a narrower or shorter root. Often an individual with a shallow and wide breast root will have breast tissue that starts all the way to just below the collarbone. It is common for those with breasts that have a shallow shape to appear much smaller than someone with the same measured size who is a projected shape with a narrow root. This can lead to professional fitters’ severely underestimating cup size - and I find that as an issue it really strengthens the argument for going into bra shopping already armed with a general idea of your starting size. Though it’s very common to find shallow breast shapes in cup sizes A-E and band sizes 28-32, they’re not exclusively within that size range and that range only. I wear mostly 32G’s, some 32FF’s, and find that for t-shirt bras that tend to be a bit more stretchy in the band, I l wear a 30GG/H. I am 5’1”, 118lbs and wear a size 4/6 dress but in certain brands I wear size 8 and must get the sewing machine out for a few alterations – usually at the waist. But at this present time my under bust measures 31, explaining why in some bras I wear a 32 band and others a 30 band.
Lean over 90 degrees and look at a side view of your breasts in a mirror. Examine where your breast tissue is in relation to your nipple. If more breast tissue is above your nipple, you’re likely full on top. If more breast tissue is below your nipple, you’re likely full on bottom. If there is about the same amount of breast tissue above and below your nipple, you likely have even fullness. This is what I’m talking about when using FOT and FOB; bra fitting is a process that will almost certainly require a bit of ‘fine tuning’ from starting with your base sizes and using that to find the brands and styles that will best suit your breast shape.

The density of your breast tissue can make a big difference to your bra fit. Today we’re focusing on soft breast tissue. You might think all breasts are soft but there is an easy way to distinguish between firm and soft breast tissue.
Firm breasts have a defined shape and need a bra that is as close to their shape as possible to get good fit (the most common problem is finding a cup size that fits but the style cuts into your boobs making it look like you’re spilling out). Soft breasts are very fluid and tend to pour into a cup. They can flow sideways, vertically down, over your center gore and they can struggle to fill the top part of a bra. Soft breast tissue also jiggles a lot more and can slide around inside your cup if the fit isn’t spot on. You can also find that soft breast tissue wrinkles as there isn’t as much fatty tissue in the upper layers of skin.

Straight
This is the most common torso shape and not to be confused with whether your overall figure is straight or curvy. On a straight torso your bra will sit evenly across all the hooks at the back. If you have a straight and narrow torso then look for bras with narrow wires.

Flared
When your rib cage is dramatically smaller at the underbust than the overbust measurement it can affect the way your bra sits. Lots of women find bras with fewer hooks at the back (2 rather than 3 or 4) sit better. It’s quite possible that you need to go up a band size to accommodate the widening of your rib cage across the wider part of your rib cage. A common alteration for flared rib cages is to bend the wires under the armpit away from the body.

Rounded
Often referred to as barrel chests, this rounding of the ribcage means that you need a lot of band and potentially not a lot of cup so you may need to add inches to your band for comfort. This also works for women with curved spines due to health or posture issues. If you have a narrow and round torso then you will most likely need narrow wires which can accommodate a lot of bust in a small width.

Breast Root Height
On average full bust women find that their breast root is between 5 and 7 inches lower than their armpit.

Assessing Your Wire Width
There are, broadly speaking, three breast root widths; average, narrow and wide. The width of your breast root is linked to which width, or shape, of bra wire will work best with your breasts.
There is no ‘best’ shape or size for breasts, we get the breasts we develop –when we develop them. The human body is capable of almost infinite physical variations, so that all breasts are simply different and wonderful however they are shaped – genetically designed to be the way they are in our own unique way. I welcome input from individuals with different breast shape and size perspectives to mine, as I feel that in order to get the “whole picture” on the subject of bras and bra fitting, bringing everyone and their different sizes/shapes into the discussion is a necessity. What I don’t need is anyone who believes that there is a growing population wearing bras that are ‘vanity sized’; that bra sizes outside of the matrix are ridiculous and the people who wear them need ‘fixing’. There’s a lot of body snark that goes on when talking about size/shape of human female bodies and believe it or not a major portion of it is from other women. If we can’t stop the back and forth crap we throw at each other along with all the various labels that come with each side of the size spectrum – how can we ever expect to improve things for everyone?

We can’t.
Time to start remedying that. Really and truly.

1.) Thou must measure thy self with an actual tape measure so that thou mayest know the measurement of thy underbust, full bust; additionally the standing/leaning perimeter of thy larger breast and the distance from nip to neck.

2.) Thou must not covet thy neighbor’s bra size. Unless thy...
There will be times when even the most reserved Bravangelism believers find themselves unable to hold back the urge to bravangelize. We must remember that not everyone is at the right place at any given moment to receive the bravangelism message and so are not ready to move forward with determining the best bra fit for them. We should be passionate about the matter of what makes a good bra fit, but not so passionate that we forget that personal preferences and individual comfort is part of that.

I have noticed there is a disturbing trend out and around on the internet and of course it is significantly a problem that is femme on femme - where women are body snarking other women. All women are real women, no matter what number/letter size they wear, how big or small their breasts and hips, tall or short, petite regular or plus sized. So I have decided to take a “physical statistics stand” and share some data about my own size and measurements in a short post (this one) before I get into some bra and breast basics.

I am 5’1” and wear a size 4/6 dress but in certain brands, I wear size 8 and must get the sewing machine out for a few alterations – usually at the waist. However, at this present time my under bust measures 31 explaining why in some bras I wear a 32 band and others a 30 band. In the years I’ve been an adult and responsible for purchasing my clothing, I’ve learned a great deal about not just how but what apparel is flattering to my body shape and proportions. When you measure using inches at 39/40-27/28-39-40 (no water retention and /water retention full bust, waist, and full hip) have a 28” inseam, and all on a 5’1” person like myself, clothing very rarely fits perfectly straight off the rack. Where bras are concerned, I wear mostly 32G’s, some 32FF’s, and find that for t-shirt bras that tend to be a bit more stretchy in the band, I l wear a 30GG/H. This can present problems once the minute details that affect bra fit are factored in. I have wide and tall breast roots – full all over and somewhat shallow.

To be an effective bravangelist the person you are trying to bravangelize will ideally be ok with allowing you to go forth with using a tape measure to find and show them what their real under bust measurement is. These numbers are not all there is to figuring out bra size and anyone who is bravangelizing themselves using a tape measure on their own should bear in mind that the numbers are to help give them a starting point.
