The Heat Shrink Tube is a versatile product created to insulate your cables and wirings through its shrinkable tube. The heat shrink tube main feature is that it shrinks in size when in contact with heat and conforms to the size of your wire. This provides protection against abrasions and it has environmental sealing. It can also be used to repair the insulations of the wires or use to bundle it.
A Heat Shrink Tube may come in different standard colors; which is why, one of the most commonly asked question is the colors available for heat shrink tube.
In choosing what color of heat shrink tube to use, there isn’t an exact international standard for it. Instead, a standard set of colors which are internationally recognized.
The following are the available colors of heat shrink tube:
These colors of heat shrink tube may also differ in color scale and shade. It is because the ingredients and colorant may differ from each manufacturer and there is no standardized color Pantone or RAL color for it. Some other manufactures also offer other colors like pink, grey, orange, stripe, or even customized color of your preference.
Purpose of the Heat Shrink Tube Color Standard
The main purpose of the color standard of the heat shrink tube is to serve as a color code to the connection you are using.
It is customizable not just in color but also in print, depending on your choice and the manufacturer. This makes it easier to identify your connections and on how you organize them.
A heat shrink tube black and heat shrink tube red are commonly bought because of its bright colors that can easily help you differentiate it from other colors.
The heat shrink tube black is also preferred for industrial applications and is deemed to provide good UV-resistance.
The heat shrink tube clear/transparent is also one of the commonly bought color because it enables the user to see through the insulation and the wire’s condition.
Meanwhile, heat shrink tube white gives a clean, all-white tube sealing of your connection that helps you assess your wire’s condition.
Heat Shrink Tubes for wire connections have different types not just in colors. It is based on the following:
Here are the following types of heat shrink tubes:
The Polyolefin tubes are the commonly used type of heat shrink tubes. It is a flexible and fast-shrinking tube that can be used in various applications.
It is also available in various colors but the black one have a lower resistance to ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation).
It is a thermoset product that can be used in numerous applications with wider temperature shrinking range.
The Elastomeric tubes have high flexibility even at low temperatures. It is resistant to diesel and petrol, making it great to use in automotive applications. It is commonly available in 2:1 shrinkage ratio.
Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP)
The FEP is a versatile product highly resistant to extreme heat UV radiation and cold temperature. It is also highly resistant against various chemicals and moisture.
A PVC tube is made out thermoplastic material. It has a low heat capacity, which can easily shrink with the use of soldering iron. It is commonly used in automobile and instrument panel. It is also cheaper than polyolefin tubes.
What is the Temperature Range for Heat Shrink Tubing?
The temperature range of the heat shrink tube is based on what material has been used. For example, a Polyolefin tube operating temperature range is from 90° C up to 100°C, while a PVC heat shrink tubing’s operating temperature is 100°C.
In buying your tube, make sure to check the heat range to avoid over shrinking or burning the tube. The table below is the summarization of the temperature range of heat shrink tube:
The heat shrink with glue or adhesive has thermoplastic adhesive on its inner wall. It melts along with the tube when heated and spread throughout the edges of the tube. The melted adhesive may also serve as a waterproof barrier for your cables.
This is an ideal type of tubing wire installations that provides a tighter and more reliable weather resistant seal.
A Heat Shrink Tube Roll is a spool type heat shrink tube that may come in different length and thickness.
It is suitable for a wide range of applications that provides resistance to moisture and strain relief. It is commonly used by people who needs multiple heat shrink tube of the same size.
example of this is a heat shrink tube ¼” that has s2:1 shrink ratio. It is commonly used in many general and commercial applications that electrically insulate terminals and wires.
This type of heat shrink is designed with waterproof protection and insulates your connections. It seals out moisture and perfect for connections that comes in contact with water.
This ensures a longer working life for your connections
A heat shrink tube is a versatile product because it can be used in numerous purposes. It is not only used for electrical applications but also non-electrical applications.
Here is the following list of why heat shrink tubes are typically applied:
Tool for Heat Shrink Tube: Heat Gun or Hair Dryer?
A Heat Shrink Tube is plastic tubing that shrinks in size when heat is applied.
It easily shrinks upon contact with heat which is an effective way to protect your wires and connections.
Each heat shrink tube has temperature capacity but any heat sources like candles, lighter or matches will shrink the tubing.
This raises the question on what type of heat source should be used.
Flame is one of the commonly used tools to shrink the plastic tubing.
Even though it does the job, there is still a possibility of burning or char the tube. It is commonly used because it can be easily purchased and available almost anywhere.
However it not advisable to do so for it might cause damage to your connection that does its job. These different types of flame source are: candles, lighter, or a torch.
If there is no other option, properly balance the tubing with the heat source and do not directly expose it with the open flame for a long period of time.
Hot Air is an electrical tool that provides as a heat source. It has an indirect heat which makes shrinking the tube safer.
These tools are heat guns or hair dryer.
This raises the question which among the two is better to use. Both tools may have adjustable heat and will shrink the tubing without worrying about burning.
The only downside is that, not all type of hair dryer will be hot enough to shrink the tubing and might take longer to do so.
How to Choose the Right Heat Shrink Tube Size
In choosing the right size of your heat shrink, there are quite a few things to consider before buying one applying it.
The following list is a summarization on how to choose the right heat shrink tube for you:
In selecting your heat shrink tube, it is important to know the size of the wire or cable you’re going to use.
This will enable you to pick what size of the tube you’ll need. It is commonly done by looking at your product information.
A Heat Shrink Tube has three (3) different ratios.
These ratios are the size of the heat shrink tube before and after heat is applied.
It’s because it enables you what size of heat shrink tube are you going to use. This is one of the important things you need to check before buying these tubes.
The heat shrink ratio of this is half of its original size once heat is applied.
The heat shrink ratio of this is one-third of its original size once heat is applied.
The heat shrink ratio of this is one-fourth of its original size once heat is applied.
It is recommended to identify the inner diameter (ID) of the tube and the size of your wire or cable upon purchasing to have an effective encasing of the product.
In connection with the shrink ratio of a heat shrink tube, knowing the wall thickness of the tube is also important.
This will allow you to figure out whether it will be too small for your connection or a perfect fit.
This wall thickness is pertaining to the Inner Diameter/ Inside Diameter (ID) which is in inches (in.) or millimeter (mm). In measuring it, the tube must be in circular and not flattened in measuring its size.
The same with Inner Diameter (Supplied) is the minimum size of the tube when it was bought, while the Inner Diameter (Recovered) is the measurement of the tube after it fully shrink or recover from heat.
A Heat Shrink tube has its specific Longitudinal Shrinkage. This is the small loss in length when the tube shrinks.
The longitudinal shrinkage may vary from 5% to 15% of the original size of the tube.
This is an additional thing to consider- and this is to know where you are using the heat shrink tube.
The heat shrink tube may me designed from various materials and may be more effective than the others depending on the specific applications you are going to deal with.
For example, your connections may possibly come in contact with moisture or other liquid, choosing a waterproof heat shrink tube or adhesive lined heat shrink tube will come in handy for waterproof sealing.
A Heat Shrink Tube is sensitive to heat. If you have extra heat shrink tubes that won’t be used for a certain period of time, it is important to place it in proper storage.
In storing your heat shrink tube, make sure to store it away from a heat below 90°F or 32°C, like direct sunlight or other sources of heat.
This is to avoid in prematurely shrinking the tube.
In using stored heat shrink tube, make sure that it is not discolored or stiffened.
The initial storage life periods are commonly from 1-5 years, proper storage may even be longer than that.
Heat Shrink Tube has one of the easiest installations because it doesn’t need complicated tools and parts to connect.
Here’s how you use a heat shrink tube:
In selecting your heat shrink tube, know your wire’s diameter first before shrinking the tube.
This will allow you to choose the right heat shrink tube that will snug fit on your wires when you shrink it.
It should be slightly smaller from the diameter of your wire to have a tight fit connection.
Also consider the heat shrink ratio of your heat shrink tube. A heat shrink ratio of 2:1 is half of the original size of the tube.
The length of both the spliced wire and the tube itself is important to consider and should be slightly longer than the spliced area.
This is because heat shrink tube shrinks longitudinally from 5-15% of its original size after revering from heating.
This is to make sure that the exposed area is properly covered and sealed.
If you are using a heat shrink tube roll or a regular heat shrink tube, but if the length of your tube is still too long for your need you could just simply cut it with a pair of scissors.
Properly insert the tube onto the wire and properly align it on the spliced area or exposed section of your wire.
Get a tool that provides heat source like a heat gun. Before applying the heat, make sure to check the specifications of your tube in terms of its heating temperature.
Evenly distribute the heat across the tube and avoid staying it in one place for a long time. Continue heating the tube until it is properly shrunk and tightly placed on the wire.
If you don’t have a heat gun, or air heat tool, open fire like candle, lighter, torch can be used though not recommended because of uneven shrinkage or insulation failure.
But it is advised to use it safely and do not directly place it on fire to avoid burning or charring the tube.
